  • Pipes Gas

MHello everyone! Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with locating gas pipes? Namely, my friend has a problem with a gas leak and it is necessary to find a pipe about a meter and a half in the ground to eliminate the leak! I think the pipe is made of plastic lined with reinforcement..

My buried gas line has a metal armor. I can attach a transmitter where it comes out of the ground at the gas regulator, then trace it with a metal detector.

Thanks Carl! Yes, the armor is made of metal here too, thanks for the idea!

Sometimes there is a solid copper tracer wire with a yellow jacket that comes out of the ground beside the pipe. Perhaps for continuity over couplers or solid plastic pipe.

Usually I use my Fisher Gemini 2-box with the TX attached to the pipe and then use the RX box to trace the pipe. You can do the same with an ordinary metal detector and a signal generator. Attach the sig gen to the pipe and set it's frequency very close to what the metal detector runs, you can then trace the pipe by listening to the interference signal.

Yes, the principle is clear to me! Thanks again!

I had a similar problem before. I rented a "Fuji Tecom PL-2000" device, and it easily located the pipe, even pinpointing the depth accurately. This device is only used for locating cables and pipes. The device has two parts: a transmitter and a receiver. You can place the transmitter several tens of meters away and use the receiver to locate it. Alternatively, you can connect the transmitter directly to the cable or pipe armor using a connecting wire for a more precise location
