LM2931 is very nice regulator, low dropout, variable. Tesoro uses surface mount version in Compadre. I got some TO-220 style at Electronic Goldmine for $1.09 a piece. http://www.goldmine-elec.com/
Another nice regulator from Linear recently announced, you could run TGSL from 9v battery (or 8 x 1.2 rechargeables).
Power Management LT3022: 1A, 0.9V to 10V, Very Low Dropout Linear Regulator
The LT3022 is a very low dropout voltage (VLDO™) linear regulator that operates from single input supplies down to 0.9V. The device supplies 1A output current with 145mV typical dropout voltage. The LT3022 is ideal for low input voltage to low output voltage applications, providing comparable electrical efficiency to a switching regulator. The regulator optimizes stability and transient response with low ESR ceramic output capacitors as small as 10µF. Other LT3022 features include 0.05% typical line regulation and 0.05% typical load regulation. In shutdown, quiescent current typically drops to 7.5µA. Internal protection circuitry includes reverse-battery protection, current limiting, thermal limiting with hysteresis and reverse-current protection. Click Here for Datasheet
This voltage converter looks like it can milk tiny voltage/current sources and convert them up even 100 times to power devices for short periods of time. Great for spy gadgets that work off solar, thermal, piezo, sound, whatever power. Great for scientific sensors that need to work off lower power in remote areas and send data in bursts. Apparently can even get power from thermal gradients to work in the dark. Maybe could get useful power from a simple antenna receiving and rectifying the "noise" signals. Could be fun to experiment with.
LTC3108-1: Ultralow Voltage Step-Up Ultralow Voltage Step-Up Converter and Power Manager The LTC3108-1 is a highly integrated DC/DC converter ideal for harvesting and managing surplus energy from extremely low input voltage sources such as TEGs (thermoelectric generators), thermopiles and small solar cells. The step-up topology operates from input voltages as low as 20mV. Click Here for Datasheet
