  • EPE Earth resisitivity meter

I have the plans but am wondering how deep does it detect? I assume it depends on the soil conditions. Are we talking feet, meters, or inches? Thanks.

    Hi pityocamptes,
We are talking about few meters; given that the soil is damp enough (It's low power unit) and probe electrodes are spaced enough (the depth of maximum sensitivity is about 1.5 times of probe spacing).
Best to use for features just under the topsoil up to 1m.

Is it possible to change out some of the components and increase the voltage rails for greater depth?

It's current, not voltage, that is important and more current doesn't necessarily translate into greater depth penetration. Depth of penetration is primarily controlled by electrode geometry. The soil resistivity will also affect the results but not as much as the electrode geometry. For most archaeological resistivity surveys only one electrode setup is used and the results are plotted in map view. For a more traditional geophysical survey multiple electrode spacings are used to generate both a sounding and a profile. The resulting data is plotted in a pseudo section where the resistivity values are plotted at the center of the array and at a depth of 1.5 times the spacing. The next step is to invert the data using something like RES2DINV, which is free for small datasets. The inversion results should put the resistivity distribution at the correct depths.

          Working Program with EPE ERM

          Dear friends ,
Or , you must work with "IP2WIN" program.
          It's a good..
          Goodlucks

            Hi Leto.
Finally wich ERM did you made and work for you?
I hear that the ERM with data logger from EPE have lots of schematic errors.
            Regards
            Nelson

              Hi Nelson,
probably you are reffering to folowing post by Dinkydick:
Save your time and money. I built the unit and never got it to
work. There are alot of errors in the schematics and descriptions.
Look for the EPE Resistivity Logger designed by John Becker.
That one works and has software for readouts.
Do not worry, both EPE projects (Robert Beck-1997, John Becker-2003) work just fine. Only "mistake" I found in 1997 project PCB are mixed pin positions of output transistors - no real problem just need to twist some TO220 transistors legs. I still need battery charger for this project... but it works.
2003 project is more complete (with AD converter and logger), analogue part is better in 1997 project.

Anybody has a pictures of EPE earth resistivity meter probes?
How to make them strong enough etc. This wasn't so clearly explained in article.

                      Serial Data Problem

I have one the Earth Resistivity Logger EPE 2003 ,but it dont send to serial data and shown me -- " bad clearly data ......... " .

What can I change in ..
                      Thanks..

                        EPE Resistivity Schematic

Unfortunately the EPE Resistivity schematic from 2003 seems to be out of print. Im wondering if anyone can forward the schematics to me.

                        Thanks.
