  • Triple Axis Compass Magnetometer

Hi got hold of a couple of these modules
Was thinking if I could make a Magnetometer out of them.
Type GY-271 Using the HMC5883L chip.
Triple axis compass magnetometer sensor module 3v-5v power supply.
    Communication mode: standard 11c protocol.

Has anyone here used one of these modules and could give any tips on it.

    Regards

Not sure which one you're looking at, but ST Micro and I think Freescale both have new 3-axis mag chips. ST has sub-uT sensitivity that might make it useful. Several companies are moving toward 3-axis mag + 3-axis accelerometer on a single chip.

      Thanks Carl
Just wondering if they could be adapted for anything useful on what we do here in Geotech or in fact what are they used for in general would be of help ?
Will read up on some of the information that have found on the net and see what others are using them for and go from there.

I have a demo kit of the ST one. Pain in the butt getting knowing what to do to get the software demo to run but I have it working now.
The channels GUI is so small that it really doesn't help with understanding the usefullness. I think my Iphone 5 with a free app does a better job.
I was just curious as to how it would react to various hot rocks I have brought home from outings. I'd like to see more sensitivity and right now I can't tell if that is an issue with the chip or software. The demo is "canned" and not an Arduino shield or the like. I need to spend more time with it.
