I would assume that by beats they are meaning a Beat frequency.
When you take two signals and mix them toghether you get a sum&difference
result. Directly proportional in frequency to the difference between
frequencys of the two signals.
I guess this is what they are doing to convert an otherwise diffucukt
pure signal into one you can work with easily by ear.
I dont actuly know this just seems like a likely explanation.
