  • IMPROVED GPS ACCURACY:

By now most of those who care probably know - but just in case.

Effective Monday, May 1, 2000, the scrambling effect that the U.S.

Government previously introduced into the satellites has been

removed. This means there should be a greatly improved accuracy

possible with all GPS units and the purchase of a new GPS receiver

    will NOT be required.

The quoted improvement in accuracy is that before you could

guarantee yourself to be somewhere on a football field and now you

will be able to guarantee yourself to be somewhere on a tennis

    court.

The numbers I have been able to locate show a football field to be

approximately 50 x 100 meters and a tennis court to be approximately

    12 x 25 meters. (Very, very roughly 160 x 360 feet and 36 x 80 feet

    respectively.)

If true this should turn the standard GPS from a relatively useless

device for our purposes into a very useful device.

If anyone has more accurate figures OR some real life accuracy

checks it would be useful for myself and others if you would share

    with us.
