    Dear Keith Barr,


    You correctly understand essence of Overhauser effect. It is the


    quantum phenomenon. There is a good information to the address

    more complete acquaintance. I can send ours paper where there are


    useful things on proton and overhauser magnetometers. It is the


    report at IAGA conference on instrumets for magnetic observatories.


    Unfortunately volume is about 300 kilobytes and it does not accept

    Really there is a type of the Overhausert magnetometer which works


    similarly of the laser, but this type has not sustained a


    competition for many areas. Here I bring a fragment of the letter to


    John Gerig, which I sent individually. I assumed that it will be


    interesting for all :

    price though it is almost ten times more...Concerning to Overhauser


    substance it is not a problem. You can freely buy in USA. For


    example radical is sold by firm Aldrich (940 West Saint Paul


    Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53233 USA). It is a TEMPO nitroxide


    spin label (4-Oxo-Tempo is the best). The price is about 10dollars


    for gramme. Substance is stable up to many year. I shall open a


    small secret which is well known. The oxygen is dissolved a little


    in water (in petrol in 10 times more). The Overhauser effect


    decreases at oxygen but the TEMPO will work in water . The normal


    concentration is about 0.01 mole on litre of water.


    If you want to try to make that: Make the coaxial (!) resonator


    similarly mentioned web page. Work in a proton precession mode but


    do not aspire to large current. The polarization field have to


    about 2-3 Oe. Vary this current and resonant frequency about 60


    (+-5)
