  • Measuring Magenetite field strength

what magnetometer would i need to use if i wish to measure the field strength of a piece of magnetite. by piece i mean i have poured crushed magenetite into a mould and mixed it with water to harden and now i wish to know the magnetic field strength produced by this larger piece of magenetite.

would i need to use the proton magnetometer or the flux gate

I would use a proton / cesium type mag so you don't have directional issues. Set it up in a magnetically quiet spot and take a reading. Then move the magnetite in and take a reading. Then subtract reading 1 from reading 2.

But if you want to know the purity of your sample, you should determine its mass by taking a sample of a known volume and weight. Then take a magnetic susceptibility reading with a Bartington MS2 or similar instrument. The magnetic susceptibility will have a strong influence on its field strength.
