  • Hall Effect Magnetometer

I would like to use a hall effect sensor for detecting the presence of black magnetite sand directly rather than measuring the earths magnetic field that is influenced by same. The advantage of the hall effect is that it gives a continuous output which makes doing a survey relatively quick. However as you all know it also has a very limited range. There was a guy that had a differential hall effect circuit on his web page and he used a 1/2" nail as a flux concentrator (which Allegro shows in their app. notes and you can also put a rare earth magnet attached to a soft steel plate 1" in dia. on the backside to further inhance the detection range).

Has anyone on this forum played with Hall effect sensors? Do you think this setup might work for my application?

Thanks for your help and if you have any suggestions please let me know.

Randy . Did you check the FGM - Series Magnetic Field Sensors ( Speake & Co Limited ) ? Use Google as your search machine and try FGM Series Magnetic Field Sensors . Its all there . Especially for field studies ! Cornelius ( Kees)

Yes I did and I have been using one of their fluxgate sensors in the field. The problem is I have to wait for the readings to settle which is why I'm looking at Hall Effect sensors as a Ferrous Metal Detector instead of measuring the earths magnetic field. Thank you for thoughtfull reply.
