I have designed and built proton mags before and am in the process of designing and marketing both a boat towed and handheld version. One thing that may not have been covered here for you do-it-yourselfers is that you need to be very careful about what you use in constructing your sensors. Time and again something as simple as putting a BNC connector at the sensor will ruin it so it will never work. This is because many kinds of connectors have nickel or some other ferrous trace metals in them. This causes a gradiant over the sensor that kills the proton signal. Also, you will never get a proton signal at your test bench or anyplace in most building for the same reason. If you build a proton mag and it doesn't seem to work, test it outside someplace rural and remove any connectors, brass filler plugs etc. from your sensors.
