  • Carl or anyone else... Need some help with Phil Barnes proton mag.

I was wondering if anyone had attempted to build Phil Barnes proton mag. I am confused about two things.

First, is the setup for the band pass filter. I don't have any audio generator (Does anyone have the plans for a very simple one? - How much are they if bought? -Radio Shack carry them?) and even if I did I would not know how to set it up to get the right frequency. Also it requires a resistor box (don't have one of these either - same questions above for audio generator) where would I hook this up if I get one. Don't know how to setup this part at all and would like some help.

Second, the tuning the sensors part is also a mystery. How would I hook up the audio generator for this part? Need a little more detailed help in setting this up as well.
I have built the flux gate mag and I do have some experience making projects but I have never used a resistor box or audio generator. Any help provided would be appreciated. Thanks -Shawn

    Forgot to mention...

It also says that to adjust the sensors that you use the audio generator in conjunction with a transmitter coil coupling. What does that mean? Does that mean that you take the audio generator and hook that up to some sort of FM transmitter and inducing a signal into the coil? It also mentions an audio oscillator, is that the same as the audio generator? Sorry if I seem so "stupid" regarding some electronics subjects. I usually build projects that are ready to go with no test equipment required. Was hoping to build this project after buying the plans, but now I don't know... Thanks for any help you can provide. -Shawn

      One more thing...

I found this while surfing the net. It a audio generator program on the computer. Could this be used for testing this project? Here is the link in case anyone wants to check it out. (Its the sweepgen file).

Re: Carl or anyone else... Need some help with Phil Barnes proton mag.

Hi shawn, I have been fiddling with that mag also. no luck yet! I have been using a little box that has leads for a speaker, and a knob to adjust the frequency. (macgyver uses them to break glass) ;-) I hooked it up in parallel with the sensors along with an ocsilliscope then added different capacitors untill the amplitude on the ocsilliscope seemed to peak. I then considered it tuned. hopefully someone here can tell me if that was right or not! please keep me posted on how yours is going. I found a few mistakes on the plans, simple things such as wires going into the wrong holes and such, but like I say, mine has yet to make any kind of a beep. (very) slow but sure it travels forth...
