  • Wire for sensor

What wire are people using on their toroidal sensors. I am looking at using enamelled coper wire (14 awg) like you have on transformers, is that the best stuff to use?

    Re: Wire for sensor

Yes, but 14awg seems to be THICK. I personally used 18AWG and my sensor already weights 3 Kg but it should have an excellent S/N ratio and a good 2µV signal.
    Go to the site: http://www.diamondjim.bc.ca/ppm.htm
and use the excel calculator there after you have carefully read the excellent text of Jim Khoeler.
Proton mag sensors are generally better with more liquid, thick wire (low resistance), high number of turns but staying within practical limits of current consumption and weight.
    Good luck,

      Re: Wire for sensor

My magnetometer project uses #24 Ga enameled copper wire and requires over 500 turns in order to resonate the sensors.

The sensors must be tuned to the precession frequency in order to optimize precession pickup within the sensor coil.

14Ga wire is for high power, low loss applications. I don't see how you can wind enough turns to make a resonant sensor coil and if you did, it would be too big and heavy to carry around.
