  • Quantro Discovery Tone Mag 1A Fast

I'm new to the forum and trying to get some feedback on magnetometers. Doing quite a bit of research on the web it appears you really need the resolution of a Proton Magnetometer (1 Gamma) with mapping software to gather good information of a magnetic disturbance in the earth's magnetic field such as a 1/2 lbs metal ball buried at 6 feet or to try and map black sands (gold ore), etc. My main goals with a magnetometer is to locate meteorites, black sands and investigate small surface cracks in mining areas which could contain a possible gold vein (I realize a mag will not pick up a conductive metal but will have a reading due to the vein which I could then map and investigate further with a PI unit). Main state of usage will be Colorado.

Doing a lot of searching I have found my likely mag which is the Quantro Discovery Tone Mag 1A Fast which Ke***co sells at $2195 USD (retails $2795). The better geo units are upwards of $10K which gets out of my hobby price range.

Then there is a $495 Magsurvey software which gives real time viewing / mapping and can interface to a GPS (WAAS) with RS232 using a small laptop or tablet computer. So to purchase the GPS, software and mag (I already have a couple laptops) the price is approaching $3,000.

I have read some of the reviews on this site where people weren't too enthusiastic about the Accurate Locators / OKM units. It seems the advertising gives some false impressions of what these instruments can do?

I have contacted Ke***co, Accurate Locators and Quantro Sensing plus a few others regarding their magnetometers and Geomagnetometers. Some you can find as low as $700 but they have their drawbacks if you really want to do anything with them. The Tone Mag 1A by Quantro is designed to operate more like a metal detector with a reading every 1.5 seconds where it will give a tone when a certain gamma change and supposed to have a shorter learning curve. Similar to the Ferroprobe by Fisher.

I'm very curious if anyone has some feedback on Quantro products or have tried using their system. And any other recommendations considering my constrained budget.

Thanks for the reply. Could you elobarate on your results and were you using this to locate black sands?
