    Ok, thanks for a description. I couldn't remember where I got it but now remember and it was for anti-thief tags.
    These tags have a space that does not 'clamp' the magnetic material. This makes sense from your experiments.

      I have used the metglas strip of an eas tag in an oscillator (4093 (5V) / TL072 (9V)). I used 3 mm plastic straw as a casing with polystyrene endcaps, and about 1000 turns. Yet to test for stability.
