  • Phil Barnes PPM project

Ok, I have built both EPE Pic and Carl Moreland Fluxgate projects and they work fine.
But I cant seem to get my Phil Barnes PPM project to work.

Has anybody here built it and get it to work?

Were you happy with the results?

I was wondering if I should spend more time on this. Or maybe this project is useless for me.
I was thinking of using it for maritime search.

When I built my PPM, I could not get it to work at my workbech in the garage. The water heater, washing machine, dryer, and two automobiles, totally distorted the earths flux. I knew the PPM was working because the PPM was picking up the ticking from my electric wristwatch.

I took the PPM far out into the backyard. Guess what !
    WEE WEe Wee wee.

Thank you for the reply Phil.

I know about the problems testing the unit indoors. I read your manual well when I bought this kit from you.

I have some trouble making the coils. Nothing serious, but as you mention that it will take the longest and hardest work. That it is ok. This is a fun project, you can learn alot from it.

But I´m looking for someone who has built this kit and used it. I want to hear if someone has used it in the "field" under real condition. And if someone has used it in shipwreck search I really want to hear storys how this project worked in that enviroment.

The sensor coils are not suitable for underwater use and I have not attempted to use them underwater. The sensors can be constructed for underwater use, but would have to be shaped for minimal drag and sealed appropriately for minimal drad resistance. Their shape is such that the "fish" is pulled underwater as the boat moves forward.

Some years ago, I bought a book authored by Murphy Dalton, of Texas, which showed a lot of thought in designing underwater "FISH"

If you are quite serious, you might see if the "Catalog is still available.
