    I was wondering what size of resistors to use 1watt or 1/2watt or 1/4watt or 1/8watt or will any work? Which is the correct size to use?

      I think half watt is good enough.
      Smaller is not a problem there are not at high currents.

        Hello.
        I'm new to the forum.
        I'm in France. I have a classic 3 slx for many years (1999).

        I want to realised (myself) Mr Bill's mods on my detector.
        The Classic 3 SLX is made factory with the "ground balance".

        I have to check and modified the following points:
        1) Replace resistor R24 with a 2.2 Meg. You could have either a 470k or a 1.5 Meg there depending on when the unit was manufactured.
        2) Check resistor R7. If it’s not a 51 ohm resistor, replace it with one of that value. It’s most likely a 100 ohm from factory. Later manufactured units had 51 ohms.
        3) S.A.T changes. R32 220k resistor can be changed out. Raising the value been installing a 375k running it through a toggle switch with the 220k.
        4) Threshold: Remove VR4 trimmer off the board replacing it with a 100k linear taper, single turn potentiometer.

        Yes but……

        5) Ground balance: Remove VR1 Trimmer off the board. Replace with a 50k linear taper, single turn potentiometer.
        Should I make this change knowing that my detector already has a "ground balance"? See photo
        Risk of malfunction or inconsistency if I add this mode?

          Your ground balance is fine.
          The other modification you can do, but look good that the motherboard is the same.

          Best regards Theo

            Thanks for your reply.
            I would take a photograph of the motherboard for enjoy your advice.

              is a 2.2 meg resistor the same as a 220k resistor.I am having a hard time finding a 2.2meg.

                I have been having trouble finding a 2.2 meg resistors and I was wondering if a 2.2 meg is the same as a 220k ? or I guess what I am wondering is, is meg and k the same(is a 2.2 meg a 2.2k)?

                  1000K = 1 Meg
                  You can also use 2X1Meg in series.
                  Or 1 meg and 1.2 meg in series
                  It is not so critical.

                  Best Regards Theo from the Netherlands!

                    Ita as wiellie says..

                    1 ohm
                    10 ohm
                    100 etc
                    1,000 = 1k ohm (k is a thousand multiplier)
                    10,000 = 10k
                    100,000 = 100k
                    1000,000 = 1000k = 1M (M is million multiplier)
                    10,000,000 = 10M

                      Just to reiterate what wiellie and golfnut said, but in a different way:
                      2.2k = 2200 ohms
                      2.2meg = 2200000 ohms

                      I would suggest reading an introductory electronics book to understand how to combine resistors in series / parallel to get different values.

                        Question on the Two tone board.

                        When using the 2 tone board does the user....

                        1) Have all metal position selected on the Disc pot ? - ( so you have full depth)

                        or is it the case that in all metal the Disc and Geb channel gating is so close together the signals coming through look the same and the 2 tone board would not split them up?

                        S

                          Hello
                          Following my previous post, here is the picture of my motherboard. Is it the same as the Classic sl ? .... Can I do the following mods ? :

                          Remove VR4 trimmer off the board replacing it with a 100k linear taper, single turn potentiometer.
                          Replace resistor R24 with a 2.2 Meg. You could have either a 470k or a 1.5 Meg there depending on when the unit was manufactured.

                            It looks like the same.
                            But I see that vr1 also on the motherboard.
                            And that is the ground balance!

                            Best regards Theo.

                              The Classic III SLX already has a ground balance . See the gray cables connected on the motherboard.

                                Yes I know, that's why I find it confusing!
                                It is therefore a slx?
                                I only know the sl version!
                                On Internet is almost nothing to find about this version.
