    Nice job

    Well done.

Does not work on all beaches here in the UK

Most can be made to work by turning the threshold down a touch but on some this only gives a few inches of detection depth.

Nice flat even sand I can run almost flat out.

Fails big time around rock pools though

    • Congratulations, for nice mods and yes, this old detector works excellent

      • I have a classic id and did the modifications as listed by mr bill. the discrimination works but in all metal I have is a loud threshold that I cant adjust. Can someone give me the wiring to the pots. thank you. will follow up with my progress in case it helps others

        • I'm guessing,if you did the threshold mod and have a pot on the outside of the case for it,that the wiring is backward. This would allow for a straight through full power threshold instead of going through the variable resistor pot,no? Someone can correct my thinking if it needs correcting....

          • yes an external pot 100ohm

            • are the little blue pots that I took off the board wired opposite to the pots put on theoutside of the case

              • I don't remember...I modded mine 2 years ago....just switch the 2 wires around on your threshold pot and check your result. Nothing negative will happen if that's not the answer, but I suspect it is...

                • I don't recall if the trimmer on the board had 2 or 3 wires, but there should only be two going to your external pot, look at the board traces carefully...

                  • ok I will try later today

                    • Threshold has three wires. Middle one from the board must go the middle on the external. The other two do not matter if they are the wrong way round it will just work backwards.

                      • Thanks Koala! My memory was a bit fuzzy on that one,a constant full blast TH would NOT be my idea of a fun machine to use...

                        • Require some help regarding the IDX upgrades,i have a mint condition Pro version, does anyone supply all the upgrade parts in a complete kit of some kind, the IDX has the 950 coil and a new 5.3 one being shipped over from the US to the UK.In theory a manual GB would be best to 'match' these coils perfectly but is it essential or could i get away with it ??

Sven from Canada has kindly sent me all the pdf files to carry out the job and also the components used, but must admit its plucking the courage up to switch the soldering iron on and cutting various wires etc,i can wire a 3 pin mains plug but a electronics whizz kid i ain't.If its a easy then i may do it,but i still dont feel 100% confident in doing it.

                          • Fairly sure the small coil will work fine without any adjustment. Small coils are more tolerant to the ground balance being slightly out. There is also a good chance the coil will be a close match anyhow and not need any adjustment.

                            • @Koala,many thanks for the reply, the new smaller 5.3 coil should be here early next week, must admit the IDX Pro although a basic machine to look at,it performs very well on trashy sites and the depth with the 950 coil is reasonably good as well.

Yes preforms well in the trash. To get depth on small objects on edge you need to run the machine with very little discrimination. Most iron then breaks through but if you use good quality headphones you can hear a tone difference.

To give you an example if you run enough discrimination to run silent then a cut half penny on edge will be almost undetectable.

I built one from the plans on here and used it as my only detector for over a year. Only going out a couple of times a month. There a lot of feedback from the tones. Volume, sharpness and quality of the rise and fall and is it consistent left to right and front to back sweeps. After a fair bit of time I was thinking that sounds like a deep coin or sounds like aluminium trash. Correct most of the time.
