Early generation NiMH AA cells were about 1200/1150 mAh, so that probably explains why the charger has a current limit of 100 or '114' mA. Yes, it would be a good idea to fit protection, I would suggest a polyfuse of about 1 Amp rating (similar to the original's rating) but leaded, obviously, not SMD.

Your charger is marked "500mA" so you need a higher current than 250mA.

This would work and will self reset.
