  • sovereign GT stability????????

Hi there looking for some advice I am using a GT with a 1000 tornado coil, on two separate times now beach detecting my machine starts of very stable then after about 2.30hrs in to detect the machine seems to become unstable. it seems that every time I came to the end of a swing with the coil then on to the return sweep the machine gives of a detected tone and this continues to go on in this manner, it make the GT hard to get on with. I have checked my coil connector to the box and that is tight. is it possible the coil is gone (but it has no problem finding and pinpointing targets) or the battery is on its way out (which was fully charged). or is it possible that it is the multi Frequency changing all the time. help help help....

Pete, I had the same problem with my 800 Tornado.I used it as a wader and some how the area where the cord goes into the coil leaked water.I sold the coil on Ebay as is, with the problem described, to help pay for a new coil.If I do any wading my current coil will have silicone around the cord nut on the coil.Good Luck HH Ron

I have had similar problems with the Minelab coil. They leak a little and the static shield ground connection corodes apart.

David,at the price of new Tornado coils it may not hurt to use silicone around the cord nut at the coil.HH Ron

I had a similar problem with a different Mfg's coil. It was advertised as being waterproof so I
used it underwater. Immediately afterward it started falsing a lot as water had gotten inside it.
A hollow coil is lighter but a filled one is more waterproof....

can u give more info pls. You said only after 2.5 hrs does it go when using on land after 2.5hrs - - - it could be battery,. When beach working do you get the coil wet in rock pools or surf? If Iyou go straight to the surf and dunk it - it should false then and there if it leaks.

                  Maybe shorten battery life?
It is most logical explanation, because if it was about the coil; than it should manifest such behavior from a start and not after 2.5 hours
                  .

Hi Peter, I have exactly the same problem with my Sovereign Elite when down the beach. The machine is fine for a couple of hours then it gets so unstable I have no hope of hearing any tiny deep signals. I think it is a coil problem (Tornado 1000) though I'm not aware that I have got it wet. Last time on the beach I used my 15" coil (NEL) and didn't have any problems. I think I will have to attempt to look at the cable where it enters the coil. Strangely though, after about 15 minutes of this dreadful instability, the detector can settle down fine again which made me wonder if it was a problem with some sort of electrical interference source from a ship or mobile phone.

Check battery power continuity. Loose or dirty contacts, bed solder, loose wire etcetera.

My elite seems O.K since I opened up the control box and cleaned the foil shielding that surrounds the circuit boards. I also cleaned the paper clip connection to that foil shielding. I thoroughly overhauled the meter which was full of sand and had corroded connections, despite it being sealed with tape.

or the battery is on its way out

measure the voltage of battery, before and after.
