  • Troy Shadow X3 ground balance question

Hello all. I really like this detector. But what annoys me is that sensitivity anything above factory preset (8 on a dial) makes it sensitive on stones. I thought if manual ground balance could be any useful? Could anyone tell me if this makes sense to do and if possible which pot on the board should be replaced (I will post pictures of the board soon)? I was also thinking about another coil. Unfortunately I don't have enough knowledge to do it by myself. Could anyone make a coil for this detector or tell me which other coil could fit X3? Thanks a lot in advance. Regards

        thank you.
troy coils are similar to tesoro... try measure your coil and compare your data with you see here in a coilsdatabase.

Is there any info here how to make measurement?

X3 coils are way different from any Tesoro coil.
You are probably confused with fact that X2 was projected by Tesoro and indeed it's coil is similar to Tesoro coils.
But certainly not X3 and X5 coils! Because X3 and X5 are designed by Fisher.
Confusing story about those Troy's, i wrote about that long time ago here on forum.
I also tried to match few different coils with Troy X5.
Quicksilver 28cm coil for CZ5 and CZ3D can be matched and can work nice with Troy X5 and X3
            .

Greg, that sounds like pretty normal behavior.
Almost each md model i saw so far is acting "wild" with Sense risen over 80%-90%.
My Deus is "singing" like Pavarotti with Sense at 96 (100 is max) on some soils and under some conditions.
Just rise Disc pot and that should "soften up" a bit your problem.
I wouldn't try to mess with internal Troy's presets (trimmers) if i was you, because you can easily make it much worse and later you can have difficulties to return it back to previous state.
Among those inside trimmers there is one for adjusting GEB, i am sure because once i located it and also readjusted GEB on my X5.
But it was long time ago and i forgot which one was for GEB.
Looking at your photos i am trying to recall... but am not sure.
Worst thing you can do is to start turning all of them. You can bust machine just like that.
Troy is extremely intolerant on such behavior.
Just close it and be happy with it the way it is now.
Wait until we find out which one of those is GEB trimmer.
In meantime rise Disc and try if it will "ring" again under same conditions as you described
                .

Thanks for reply. I think I saw it somwhere, when digging the web that CZ coils could be used. But as I remember there was something to do with pins in the coil plug? Anyway, I'm not going to mess with those trimmers. I was thinking that maybe the same way as it is in White's Classic, the ground balance could be added. So, are these coil values the same for X3 then?
And looking on pictures of the board, could any modifications be added to make X3 closer with features to X5?

Yes coil pins need to be matched because those are different at both coil connectors.
You don't need to do anything extra, Troy is already having GEB but at X3 it is inside as trimmer and at X5 it is outside on front panel as potentiometer.
X3 and X5 are almost identical except that X5 is having some commands taken out on front panel.
That's usual "trick" manufacturers are using to extend their offer. The very same machines are advertised and sold as different models, just because some of those are having some commands "locked" inside the box and fixed as presets and some of those are having them outside on front panel.
So X3 and X5 are almost identical.
What you have to do is to precisely locate GEB trimmer and replace/conjoin it with potentiometer put on front panel
                      .
Best way to be sure what to do is to obtain/lend X5 and to compare it with X3 from the inside; wires, pots, switches... etc

If it works, and if you understand the circuit better than the original engineer did, then go ahead and fix it. Otherwise be glad it works, enjoy the product, and spend your time doing something constructive with things you actually do understand.

Do i see some hidden critics here or what?
Nobody ever even dared to think to understand the circuit better than the original engineer; nor ever intended to say something like that, God no!
This is a forum for such kind of talks, we are enthusiasts here, the hobbyists, and we usually do like to investigate bit more behind the "curtains" of md engineer secrets.
Your job is to hide - our job is to search for!

All right, I know now that I could have a try with CZ coil or build a new one. And I like the second option. But as I mentioned before, don't have too much knowledge. I browsed archive and couldn't find proper info how to measure inductance and all that stuff. Actually that's the thing which I really miss here, a step by step guides how to's for not so experienced users. So, any help will be much appreciated.
