  • XLT LCD hard-core repair...

I just purchased a Spectrum XLT detector that needs a new LCD. I had tried repairing the conductive tape interconnect between the glass and pcb and got 90% there but I wanted to go all the way and get it 100% (plus it seemed too flakey and unreliable as it was). Anyway, in the process I got the tape too hot and it cracked - now useless. I see repair kits for automotive dash displays using the same kind of tape but couldn't find one affordable to try for the LCD. So I'm wondering if I could take one off a working (surplus) display and transfer it to mine. Anyone try this? In the meantime I have a couple complete displays on order from China and am considering just sending the whole thing to Whites as their cost to replace with the DFX display and check the whole unit is very reasonable.

I have the original tape fully removed from both the board and pcb. Nice clean traces on the pcb and the contact areas on the glass panel are clearly visible when looking though a microscope. (cleaned both with flux cleaner first, then isopropyl alcohol)

Is not it best to order the right parts at the company Whites? Or is it too expensive?
The XLT is a super machine! (My first big detector).....
But a repair worthwhile in any case!
It is difficult to get a good contact. I have tried to repair a small liquid crystal display for an instrument. Tricky. But this was a desktop unit. The detector must but rough conditions exist ...
It is best to use original spare parts from Whites ....regards

I am just curious if it would work to swap the tape from another LCD. The LCD's I ordered from China are the correct size and electrical pinout but might be upside down or something weird. One is black on blue and another is black on white. The original is a yucky yellowish green with black. I can wait a few days for them to arrive and try them. I couldn't find conductive tape by itself. I may have a surplus LCD to try stealing tape from - with the help of a heat gun. Whites doesn't favor selling just the LCD by itself as people have had issues installing it.

I replaced my spectrum (Eagle, rainbow logo) lcd with a display I found on an ebay site.
Is yours an xlt or a dfx.
Ia'm sure this has been covered on this site.
If its the same as mine I had to solder some long pins on the lcd to connect to the socket .
Also the dc-dc converter usually dies, (you get no backlight).
        Hope that helps
        Cheers

I realized the ebay replacement that was cool - white on black - had an led backlight and I'd lose it as you say. So I just sent the whole thing up to whites. I determined that the ribbon tape is not available to us commoners. As whites charges $50 for the LCD and something like another $20 to check out the whole thing and I've never tried it since I bought it in this condition I took the simple nobrainer route this time.

hi,the XLT lcd model is the PG 12864E, does anyone knows any replacement?
Can be ERM12864-2 a good substitute?

Don't think so - that one has an LED backlight and comes in 15 varieties as you can see from the spec.
