    Actually many pinpointers are lower... Garrett and I believe Minelab are 12kHz, the new White's is also 12kHz. Most pinpointers also use a loaded oscillator design which is basically in the BFO family. Yes, you could design a regular coil for it but it will likely suck, which is why no one makes regular detectors using the loaded oscillator design.

    If you can find an all-analog detector that used a wideband coil design that would be your best bet for playing with the frequency. Off hand, I don't know what that would be.

      The Garrett XT is a 15 khz machine;

      http://www.garrett.com/hobbysite/hbb...ech_specs.aspx

      That's a nice machine (it should be for $1000!). Some of the Tesoro's run at 15 khz.
      The 250 should be good to start with. Many people are happy with the stock one.
      There is a partial schematic floating around at some russian site.

      Oh here's a link;
      http://www.phazitron.com/repair/ACE250.html

      So pick one up and have fun. Ask questions and try some stuff. There's lots of people
      here to help if you try some mods...

            this is the 1 that I probably will own within a year ... but I don't wanna start with this 1, scared to ignorantly abuse and break it... keep in mind I have only been interested in detecting within these past few weeks

            http://www.garrett.com/hobbysite/hbby_at_gold_main.aspx

            that is going to be my first real detector...

              soil matters with garrett, my best mate is a garrett nut, he has done exhaustive tests on these machines, he heard a rumour that the ace 150 out performs the 250 and is on par with the euroace on certain soils using the small nugget shooter coil.
              so he tested it, and low and behold on our local soil it goes deeper than the 250 or euroace using the same coil on a sovereign and his 18ct wedding band, now if you swallowed the garrett line this is not possible, my point is there is more to this than the detector itself.

              the most startling facts from his tests were that the at pro was way better than any atx(no surprise there) but he owns an imported atx 350 which is supposed to be a euro ace in all but name only, but it was second behind the at pro but better than the 150(nugget) setup and better than the euroace.
              so you never know the atx 150 with nugett coil may well suit your needs and bridge the gap untill you get the at gold.
              a bit cheaper too a proper garrett dealer may even do you a deal and sell you the 150 with the nuggett coil, to by both the 150 and the nuggett coil separately here is about the same as the 250, so i guess its swings and roundabouts, but if you have the right soil its something to think about.

                The ATX runs at 730 Hz. But it's pulse, not VLF.

                  No specs? Or like i said, depends on build? What is its potential ?

                    All HH details are in the article -> Hammerhead

                    It sounds like you need to get yourself a copy of ITMD -> Inside the METAL DETECTOR - Published September 2012

                      If you let us all know Exactly the things you want your machine to hunt for and what ground, sea, dry sand, you will do it on, we can give you some more pointers.

                      What is your budget and what are you expectations?

                      Do you have basic audio lab test equipment?

                      How much time do you have to embark on a project.

                      or

                      Do you just want to buy a working machine and just use it.

                        What is an audio lab?
                        Time is limited sometimes due to work, im a truck driver, but i do get a week off every month
                        I want to buy a good one and use it or cheap and modify

                          That narrows it down a bit. Now your going to get more than one opinion - mine is below/

                          With your immediate needs a good all rounder that will do ok in rivers and find a range of interesting artefacts/coins - small medium or large (15kHz) comes with a good coil.

                          You can submerge with waterproof headphones!

                          Ive seen these used and are useful solid performer is the AT pro. S
