Has anybody tried using the lipo batteries in place of the regular ones?

Yes - at other brands / 3 x lipo is usefull in those detectors you got 8 x AA.
My Vista Gold... And my Nokta Velox one (pictures).

I found the Excalibur manuel at that says 12 volt.. So why not 3 x lipo.

I do not know how much capacity your Stock Battery got, but the best Lipo and Li ion batterys normaly got more milliamp.
So yes those new type of batteries will last longer.
Did you see the Etrac Lipo battery improvement, its Very nice. Same idea with 3 x lipo(Last longer).
Using other type of batteries at a VLF Detector only got do with economy... In your case were you allready got a rechargeable Battery, it will take some time before you will win something by doing this.
Let say that you can run 10 hours like it is today, and you make a lipo case and you got 2 hours more... That what we are taking about.
I would forget it in your case. Buy an extra Stock Battery and bring it with you, that makes sense.
