LTC3265 the cats meow when it comes to battery options

A voltage doubling charge pump and an inverting charge pump both followed by LDO regulators, nice options for using a single or two lithium ion batteries and get the voltage you need. I have been experimenting with this regulator. New and a little high in cost but it solves the battery problem.

They make a handful of interesting and useful regulators in the LT30xx range too.

The max232 or equivalent can make a poor man's version. Input +5v and get +/- 10v output, ignore the RX/TX pins.
