ID:	371683I foolishly left the batteries inside my Whites Beach Hunter I D. metal detector for a long time without checking and a lot of corrosion built up on the negative connecting terminal of the detector itself with the result that it broke off. Getting access to the terminal was so difficult so eventually I had to drill through the top of the brass peg to release it and now I will have to completely make a new one. I am not sure what metal to use for this purpose - obviously, something that conducts electricity but it has to be springy so that when the battery case is inserted and pushes up against it it will resist and push back thus making a good connection. This piece of metal attaches to the brass peg that protrudes down into the battery compartment. The peg has the wire on top that connects to the circuit board. I would be so grateful for any help to fix this problem which is otherwise an excellent beach detector. The photo looking inside the battery compartment of the detector shows the one good positive connector. The negative connector missing on the right hand side with just the empty hole now showing is what all corroded and which I have to replace but don't know what to use.

    The contacts are custom made and are nickel-plated brass as I recall. You might find something off-the-shelf that is somewhat close and can be bent/shaped to work. Keystone is a popular vendor for contacts. You could also order the right part from White's service in the US (Centerville-West is your best bet).

      Thank you Carl for your helpful reply. I will have a look at the Keystone parts. I'm in the UK and we were told that Whites is no longer operating. Certainly their detectors are no longer advertised here.

        Yes, White's shut down and assets were sold to Garrett. I assume the Inverness facility simply closed up. The head of the factory Service Dept took all the spare parts to his home and does repair work there, he likely has the battery contacts in stock.

          Its just unreal, you can leave a set of flat batteries out on the bench for 10 years and they never leak, but leave them in a machine and they leak in a couple of months.

            Yes, 6666 and stripping out batteries isn't always convenient. There must be a very tiny current that continually flows at a particular point. The positive terminal was unaffected. Using Carl's suggestion, I've managed to track down all the parts I need from component suppliers and with some innovation I hope to be able to repair the damage. None of the tools I have reach that far though to hold the nut in place etc. so its going to be difficult.

              Sure as Murphy! Once had a dog with the same behavior. Inside the house, constant leak want. Outside with a zillion trees and whatnot, error 633 "bladder not found".
