  • Minelab equinox coil extension

    Hi Guys

Before I go ahead and look for a M12 cable extension like this RS stock No 877-1191, just wanted to ask, would it be detrimental in any way to extend the coil cable length on a Nox by 1m

I have seen on the thread here, named ML EQUINOC coil discussion thread that the power cables on the ML are thicker than the signal cables, how important is this ???

I suspect the extension cable has 8 straight wire connections, whereas the Minelab cable likely has the TX & RX in coaxially shielded lines. So the main concern I would have is noise coupling into the RX lines. Probably the power wires down to the coil can withstand a few more milliohms.

      Thanks carl

I was wanting to mount the Control pod (Compleat with handle) to my rucksack so I could see the screen, if need be, but wanted to lighten the shaft so I was only swinging the coil. I normal detect for three or four straight days, and at 5 hours per day and wanted to make things a little lighter to swing

"I suspect the extension cable has ... etc"
The cable details are described in the 'Equinox Coil' thread. TX is shielded with ECW in the lapped screen; plus 5 very thin additional PVC-insulated multi-strand wires.
Of the 5 thin wires, none have high currents, so cable like 7 x 0.2mm would probably be OK for 1 metre.
The screened TX cable is the BIG problem. TX coil resistance is pretty low, the cable core and screen of the extension need to be kept very low to avoid signal degradation. And how important is the 'Litz-style' screen? It would be hard to replicate such cable.

I had considered making a 0.5 metre extension cable myself, so I could use a second middle-rod, for searching large spoil heaps, and maybe river hunting. But even 0.5 metres could cause problems.
