  • Explorer headphone wiring

    I have a Explorer that the 1/8" headphone jack has failed. It is well out of warranty and decided to fix it myself. When I took the old jack out the wires broke at the jack....( it was siliconed into place and difficult to remove). Now i do not know which wire is which. There is a yellow, orange and a white wire. How do I determine which is left, right and ground.
    Thank you for any help Gregg

          That is what I ended up doing. I made a detector stand out of pvc that has a small piece of 1/2" pvc tube fastened in the middle. I found a 1/4" jack that was on a extension cord that was the right size for the jack to fit in the tube, ran the cord through the hole where the 1/8" jack was and soldered it in. So far it is working out real well. I wish I could send a photo but I do not have a digital camera. I don't think you will have any luck trying to find a 1/4" jack that will fit in the space available.

              Try here -> www.maplin.co.uk
              They have both 6.35mm (1/4") and 3.5mm jack sockets.
              You can order online. Hope this helps.

                I am pretty sure that you won't be able to get a 1/4 jack to fit. From my memory of whats in there your will have to knock some plastic out of the way just to insert a 1/4 plug even w/o jack installed. I have never seen a Explorer 2 but I thought that it still retained that miserable 1/8 jack.

                  THe small jack is

                  available at Radio Shack. It's identical to the one that is in the Explorer.

                    I make a metal arm cuff, stand, headphone adapter

                    Once you replace the jack, use this to avoid it from happening in the furure.

                    It has a metal arm cuff, a metal stand, and an adapter from 1/8" to 1/4".

                    For more details, send me an Email.

                      headphone jack

                      I to had real nightmare problems with the 1/8 Minelab headphone jack. I found a 1/4 inch jack and took the electronics out of the case and fitted the jack in front of the electronics next to where the searchcoil plugs in. The jack worked fine but the speaker would not stop working while the headphones were plugged in. So I cut the speaker wires then the headphone jack stopped working. So I connected the two speaker wires and the headphone jack worked, but for just a few seconds, then I blew a transistor. Probably should have placed a resistor in place of the speaker. So now I have a working Minelab with no sound. So, if anyone knows anything about the Explorer electronics, and specifically the transitror located next to the speaker wires, or know where I can get a transistor, it would really be appreciated.
