  • Battery conversion

I purchased an underwater metal detector off E-bay but when I took the back off it to place new batteries in, the battery wires were broken. They were small and cheaply made. My question is what are the steps to take to convert to a drop in battery system. Help please I know this may seem simple to you technologically gifted individuals but to me its like brain surgery.

What kind of "battery wires"? Does it have a 9v battery clip? A photo might help...

      Hey CARL-NC

The wires are small like in telephone jack lines one red and one black. The connection is broken off from the inside of the machine where it goes into the housing. This is an underwater detector so I don't know if I should breach the housing or not. It holds eight AA batteries in a square battery holder which fits inside the unit but the connections on the holder are o.k.

The battery wire will have to be reconnected, so it sounds like you have no choice but to open the housing. If it's brand new from a business seller, I would return it for replacement (what brand is it, BTW?)... if you open it, that will void whatever warranty it might have, and you run the risk of leakage which could destroy the whole thing.

You might think to replace those with a rechargable battery.
Take a look around at ALL Electronics.
They have a lot at cheap price's like the one below
that they sell for $1.00. You need to make sure that the battery is connected
to a voltage regulator on the board, since three of these at 3.7 volts each
(if wired in series) would be 11.1 volts. Your 8 pack of AA's makes 9 volts.
The Voltage regulator should be a LM7809, which is a 9 volt regulator.

Hope it gives you some options for your new detector.

            Battery replacement

Thanks for the info fellas but I have suceeded at nothing. I can't even get into the housing from the front of the unit. I removed the nuts from the switches on the front and the switches fell inside the housing. There appears to be no more bolts but I can't remove the cover. I know it had a rubberized seal but how far back would this go. I'm losing my mind I don't want to break it but it may be a golf club by tomorrow. By the way CARL-NC I bought it off E-bay from an individual. Who by the way said they had no problems with it . But he didn't even know what size batteries it took supposedly by the way it is a Cobra Beach Magnet made in China sold by Kellyco.            I guess that's what I get for shopping on E-bay. It was my first purchase and my last. Lesson learned.

I may have damaged it beyond repair. Not intentionally though. I tried to remove the front by prying it open. I didn't break anything but I did scratch it up. I also scraped the rubber from the seam and worked around the outside with a screwdriver. However if you could help at a reasonable price that would be great. I think i can buy some waterproof sealant to keep it waterproof. Who knows it may have never worked to begin with. But, if your willing to help give me your address and I will ship it. I live in North Carolina. I figure you must also due to the NC initials after your screen name. You can decide on a fair price later.

I will send it tomorrow. By the way it's interesting about Oak Ridge, N.C. I found a belt buckle about 12 inches down in my yard here in Earl, N.C. that has OAK RIDGE on it and was wondering what it is exactly it has 1832 date and thirteen stars. I figured it might be some kind of military academy but didn't know for sure. I'll put it in the box as well and you can let me know what you think of it.

Recheck the date... maybe 1852? Yes, there is the Oak Ridge Military Academy, founded 1852. I can run the buckle by the office and ask about it.

                        OAK RIDGE Date is 1852

I'll have to send the detector in the morning had to go to Bryson City N.C. this morning to visit wifes family. You were right about the date 1852 that is whats on the buckle. I placed it in the box already, it's in a plastic bag along with the switches that were taken off.

                          Thanks Carl

I don't know how to get in touch with you. I just wanted to confirm shipping charges and your charge for working on the detector. I have sent several e-mails which you can disregard if you see this. My family is leaving for Myrtle Beach on the 6th and I wanted to let you know I won't have access to a computer. My computer has a virus I think and isn't working properly. I just had to replace the power supply and buy a new monitor after the last thunderstorm. Anyhow if you see this let me know.

I replied to a couple of your emails... got everything back together last night. However, my idea of switching the battery pack to a 9v clip style won't work, not enough room in the compartment for this. So I will reinforce the existing battery pack. I should be able to ship it Monday, which means it might not make it by the 5th. There is no charge.

                              Hey Carl its ncfathead again

Just wondering if you got to check out the belt buckle to get a possible history on it. Maybe the academy issued them to cadets or something. I figure the way it is made it may not be that old. Anyway you can keep it if you like it is still an interesting find and it may mean more to you living in the Oak Ridge area. Beach trip is almost here the family is getting excited.
