  • TDI to TDI Pro

Hi, hoping Carl can chime in here. I may have lined up an original TDI. My understanding of the differences between the original and the Pro is the lack of a volume control and the lack of a fine ground balance knob. Were there any other differences?

I found someone's reverse engineered schematic of the TDI Pro and see the volume pot is a ahead of the audio amplifier. Is the same audio amplifier topology present in the original TDI, so it should be as easy as replacing a fixed resistor or two with a pot?

For the Ground Balance, I saw an old post of Carl's somewhere that the fine was just a 10k pot in series with the 100k coarse? So it should be as easy to add a pot and potentially dial down a trimmer to make these equivalent? I'd much rather drill a hole for a proper pot than bolt some stupid vernier knob adapter on like I saw someone selling on eBay.

With these 2 mods will I have upgraded it to a Pro? Thank you in advance.

The TDI Pro is the exact same design as the TDI. The Pro has the volume control header added to the PCB, so an older TDI may not have this but it is not difficult to kludge it in. The Fine/Coarse GB is just a matter of wiring 2 pots together. Otherwise, same machine.

Hi Carl, The TDI showed up today. Sorry to bother you with one more question. Can you tell me the family of the coil connector that's used on the TDI? Looks to be the same as the Minelab and I'd like to find it at Mouser so I can use the Whites/Minelab coils in my DIY. Thanks

It's generically known as a GX-16 connector. Commonly called a microphone connector or a CB connector.

Carl is the man to ask about the TDI for sure.

Greetings, between the "Gold Scan IV" Detector and the "TDI", which one has better performance, ground balance and better sensitivity to search for gold nuggets?

They are pretty close, but I think the TDI had a few minor improvements that should give it a slight edge.
