  • Surprised! pin-point switch on Sovereign Elite. .

I did the pin-point mod on my Sovereign Elite a while back. It works great.

I recently got me a Sovereign GT. I wanted to do the same mod it and looked around to see if anyone had done it yet, since the switch is actually a 3-position type, and I wasn't sure if it was going to be more trouble than it is worth.

I opend up the GT, and everything inside it says Sovereign Elite. The main circuit board chip says the same thing on both of my Sovereigns. [Elite rev. 1.1].

I took some pics of both ckt boards, and am looking at teh extremely slight differences right now.

e-mail me for pix if you want.

There is someone that know the tip to lower the "recovery time" on this MD? (or some mod to increase the search speed ?)

        hi Laterz!
thanks for your photos again and sorry for some answering delay from me.
I would like to add POWER ON switch and see a space for a resistor. what is your opinion what is it?

The vacant spot is actually for a switch. But not for power on/off, since the volume control acts as the power switch as well.

here are the pics of the face of the Elite, and the GT. The switches and knobs are moved in different locations, but it seems that all the features that were wanted, and modded to on the older Sovereigns, were put into the GT.

                KT315,

The mod I did on the Elite is complicated to explain, and I don't have a program to draw it. I will try to explain it as best as I can, and you can always ask for further input from me.

I did cut one of the leads to the DISC/All Metal switch, and wired 3 leads from the switch to a stereo jack.

the stereo jack has five solder points. This is because some of the leads are shorted when nothing is plugged in. Once a plug is inserted, these same points are opened, and a connection is possible somewhere else.

I also used a stereo patch cable for connecting.

The remote pinpoint button is a 3-terminal type. N.O. on pins 1 & 2, and N.C. on pins 2 & 3. When pressed, the pins go into the opposite state.

The remote pin-point button is also wired to another plain jack. All three leads.

How you run your button to the jack is up to you. I placed my button at the end of a handle with the jack on the pole end. The other jack is placed inside the control box, but you will have to decide where.

Anyway, when the plug is removed, the machine acts normal. When the plug is inserted to both the control box and the rear of the pole, the machine is remotely controlled. But the button switched to the opposite of where it is set. If you are in All Metal mode, the remote makes it go into Disc. If you are in Disc, the button will make it go into all metal.

I know it is a little complicated, but it is very effective when beach hunting, because you can detect in all-metal, and just press the button to check the conductivety for id. I really don't use the feature all that much, but it is there if I want to.

The other method is a simple one. Just don't cut anything, and wire the two leads that make the machine into all metal mode to a remote switch. This is the more simpler way.

Five years ago, Limeban were telling us that the Sovereign "Saw through" ground mineralisation so didn't need a ground balance (AND I have the magazine adverts to PROVE it). NOW they think we've forgotten about it and lets face it a lot of people seem to have, they are spinning us the line that it now works BETTER WITH it !!

Hmmmmmmm I smell farmyard bovine rear end produce AGAIN from these guys . Yet detectorists keep insisting on prodivding them with more money by getting suckered in to buying the latest "spin" they produce.

Sorry guys, yes this IS a rant, but the Sov. GT?? NEW MONEY OLD ROPE, ESPECIALLY if it only has the OLD Sov Elite with my Dual band mod (yup they nicked that one from me..Check my website for the Sov Crystal upgrade, that's all it is) PCB in it..

STOP BUYING LIMEBAN, maybe they will just go away then (I wish).

                        funny thing.

Funny thing about my Sove Elite. When I got it, it was used, and was sent to get modified for Silent Search with the tones set a little higher. For me, this was a good set up, because I was not used to heating a constant threshold tone, and I wasn't after iron, so I didn't care if the machine nulled or not.

Time change. Needs change. Experience makes change. I did soem relic hunting, and iron was a desireable find, because of the possibility of it being fragmented cannon balls. Anyway, my next machine was now a GT model. It has a switch to turn the machine into silent search or not. I tried it without the silent search on, and started to like the additional information I was receiving.

I then decided to take off the mod done to my Elite model. After a little research on the web, I find that the mod is just a jumper setting. Well! well! well! Now, all I had to do was move the jumper to the other 2 pins, and now I have a regular Elite. What I decided to do, was add a switch and connect to the jumpers to make silent search possible.

Being that the Elite and the GT are identical inside, it seems that it might be possible to mage an Elite into the GT. It also seems that it would only take a few jumpers here and there to accomplish this. I just gotta see how ground tracking is accomplished and also fixed.

One day, I shall post the pix of the insides of both machines.
