  • Bounty Hunter Tracker IV mods?

(This may be a repeat post but belongs here I think...)

Does anyone have any info on increasing the depth for the Bounty Hunter Tracker IV?

    Any schematics?

There is one trim pot inside, does anyone know what it does?

    Thanks,

    -SB

    Bounty Hunter Tracker IV mods?

Hello , I am 100% sure the detector can be modified to increase the detection Depth. The first thing you can do is use a Bounty Hunter 10 inch search-coil instead of the standard 8 inch that comes with the metal detector. The next step is get a Schematic and the radio-shack model number is 63-3011. Your Tracker 4 is identical to radio shack discovery 1000 and the old walmarts Pioneer 101. This unit also has a two tone discriminate circuit. Most Bounty Hunters run at 6.99 Khz. Which is also the frequency of many detectors "Made in China" !!!! A coincidence or what ??????. First we need to find a schematic for The Tracker IV. Or if not , you will have to Put it on the bench and Analyze with your Oscilloscope and Dvm the RX and TX circuits. Maybe someone on the forum here has a schematic for sharing.........Have a Good Day...............Eugene

Thanks. Probably my nephew will upgrade to a better detector and maybe I can get my hands on it and crack into it. Seems there should be some way to make it good for beach hunting by goosing it up some way. My Compadre with 5.75" coil is too shallow and narrow for best beach hunting I think -- but great for trashy parks.

I am also interested on Tracker IV mods.
here is what pcb looks like.

sorry for bad quality photos, i am wondering what this trim pot does, seems to have no effect when i tried to adjust it.

Someone will have to trace it all out and identify all the ICs. Not sure if it's OK to post schematic on current models, although probably Tracker IV based on old design.

            Bounty Hunter Tracker IV mods?

Hello Thcruil and Simonbaker , The Tracker IV is the same as Discovery 1000 and the 'Walmart stores" Pioneer 101. They can be modified or upgraded . The first thing to do , is post a photo of the search-coil , then we can see if you have the cheap 7 inch coil which is a piece of junk !!! The 1st step is up-grading the search coil .The 2nd step is checking the "tx transistor circuit" . when we see some "clear photos" of this "Discontinued" Metal Detector , then we will proceed with some Modifications.....And yes , this Metal Detector is worth keeping and Up-Grading.........Take Care.......Bye.....Eugene

                Bounty Hunter Tracker IV mods?

Thcruil , the coil you have is very good for now . And yes , years ago I tweaked on the same pcb pot and it had no effect . But i did not have an oscilloscope hooked up to check for any type of signal change . What we need now is a clear 'close up" photo of the whole circuit board , that would benefit us all . Even where the TX wires go on the circuit board oscillator section , that would be nice to see . Maybe someone else has photos of the tracker IV circuit board they can post . Even a schematic !!............Eugene

Please be carefull on your spelling , we all need you on this Forum , you are a very Important Member and "A TOP NOTCH ELECTRONIC GURU" !!!! Anyway I did not recieve an email from you on the Tracker IV , But I will look again and double check !!!! I remember your pictures of the Discovery II , and they are beautiful pictures....... Thanks again............Eugene

It appears to me from brief internet search that it operates somwhere in 6.6 - 6.8 frequency range.
It works great on the beach, it is light, but meter does nothing, so disconnecting it would be first thing on modifications list for me
I tried hunting on wet sand in all metal mode, and switching to tone discrimination to determine target type. It is required to reduce sensivity just a little bit on wet sand. I will get bounty hunter 10" concentric soon if everything goes as planned.

I want to make DD coil for it, so could somebody please help on how it should look like, maby some threads in the forum, how i can determine approximate coil specifications, is there some simulators, coil calculators...
what size it should be for beach hunting and fast covering of large areas? maby elliptical would perform good...

                              Bounty Hunter Tracker IV mods?

Thcruil , I believe your Tracker IV is at 6.6 khz . When your making modifications , do not change the frequency from "the factory specs" only change if you think the TX frequency is wrong . I think the frequency of the more expensive Bounty Hunters is at 6.99 khz . The cheaper units are 6.6 and 15 khz. Anyway I marked on the photo where the TX circuit should be ? , and that is where you start to modify the circuit . You might be changing Q2 and a few resistors , but you must have an oscilloscope available , before you make any changes !!!!! If the 4 wires on the photo match the wires of your search coil then the TX oscillator circuit should be identical to the picture , and your detector . Then get the oscilloscope out and start tweeking away , but first check the numbers on transistor Q2 and also look in your "NTE cross reference book"..............Have fun....................Eugene
