  • hacking up a MD?

Is it possible to hack up a cheap metal detector and make it at least close to competing with the higher-end metal detectors and if so could somebody please explain how please?I have a cheaper model and don't have $1000 to spend on the one I'd love to have so I just thought maybe this could be done.Any kinda help, info, and or opinions would be greatly appreciated

Unlikely. Most of the cheap detectors now made have a lot of functionality in a microcontroller, which can't be changed.

      Exactly,
best way to keep technology protected is using uPC's, smt technology and high integration.
We can "hack" and copy mostly simply analogue detectors, but not high end detectors, for sure.
Using PIC's and Atmel's is pretty good way to protect products from majority of "hackers" today ()

        Uhm... maybe yes...

I mean , not putting horse power to a dead horse... ops...

But if you recycle the pole-shaft-container etc... mechanical parts and remove the original circuits etc... then mount inside an e.g. homemade TGS you'll end-up with a solid construction and very decent performances... if not excelent if you make all perfect!

The hard part is at coil I think... probably you cannot reuse coil container for the large TGS DD (11'')... but if so... you made big BINGO!

Forget about pimping your existent low cost circuit/coil... will not get anything good unless the circuit , itself, is a bad tuned version of something really good already... like a cloned MD of something better... e.g. some old C-scope and the like.

Usually cheap detectors are really easy stuff, recycled designs of simple things, but effective for the price you pay them: some e.g. Micronta are not bad at all... but if you want a real MD , serious e.g. searcher for the 10'' range into the ground you need totally different stuff, like TGS and similar.

If you consider... if it will be so easy pimping that way a cheap 50$ MD to something performances of a 1000$ one , WHO WOULD BUY ONE ANYMORE FOR 1000$ ???

        Kind regards,
        Max

            Hi Nakky,

            excellent work!
This looks very professional and stable. I have to build one coil for my laptop MD soon. Could you provide us with more infos on how to build such coil housings?
It will be appreciated very much.

Hi Aziz, i read all about vacuum forming on the internet, than I start to made my one former but it is still a experiment.Grt Nakky.

thanks a lot. Your coil housings are very impressive. It is sure beyond my possibilities. I put a small piece of plastic into oven. I will see what is going on. I am using only the gravity force instead of vacuum. And it seams not working perfect.

Well, I will make a fibre glass coil with resin. This is quite easy and with less expense.

                          Regards,

                          Aziz

I found a soft plastic which can be easily modelled and baked in the oven. It is called FIMO here. I will try this one day.
