  • White Classic 1 mods

    Hello all,

I'm looking for some easy to do modifications for my old White Classic 1 metal detector. What are the different kind of mods out there? I'm mainly interested in increasing the search depth of the detector.
I don't have a lot of experience in soldering, but easy things such as changing some resistors shouldn't be a problem. So what can I do myself?

    Kind regards,

    Emil

hi. Mr. Bill does something similar. http://www.surfscanner.com/Surfscan3/ClassicPage.html

Thank you for your quick response. I already sent an email to Mr. Bill (after I finally found out who he was ... ).

But is he the only one with the knowledge to boost the performance of a Classic 1 metal detector?

I'm just an amateur treasure hunter (I have no idea what the correct english term is) looking for an easy way to upgrade my detector, without actually buying a new one. So if anyone else has any tips for me, I'll be glad to hear them!!

U Know i thought the same thing maybe Mr. Bill is the God father of metal Detectors. But its strange u know u can go to other electronic sites and find all kind of information and post like cb tricks .com and u can find everything u need to know about cb's but seems like some people are tight lipped around here if i ever find out how to mod believe me i will post a step by step instruction and as time goes on i will get more and more familar with these units always someone not willing to show u things but i have a good tech he just needs to look over some of these for me thanks Rory

Emil, Classic is already very good and sensitive detector. So few things you can do on it to improve it (talking about easy mods).
First thing i could suggest you is to make DD coil for it. Simply copy inductances and resistances from original coil, find suitable wire (proper gauge) and make DD coil. You will gain more depth with it for sure.

Next i can suggest is to try to "play" a bit with TX amplitude. Replace R7 (100ohms) with 200 ohms trimmer and adjust amplitude a bit higher. Try with values from 47 to 100 ohms. Higher amplitude rise will affect Disc circuitry so pay attention on this, do not "boost" it to much. As long as Disc cicuitry works good for you - you may rise amplitude.
Next thing....amplification. You can rise resistor values as on posted pic. This will result in a higher amplification. You can face some instability in this case, but there is always "Sense" preset available, to adjust it lower and overcome that problem.

Those would be easiest "mods" i can suggest. Try and see.
          Regards!

in case we will begin to say about all Classic's updates we must get at a moment Troy X5 then a detector kinda Nexus at the end.
these strange folks believe any detector can reach hightest price range top detector level.

sell it and buy another newest one - it is finest mod on all your remaining life time.

              Ehhh!

What if he can't afford? What if he like his Classic much! Not only as metal detector but as "cosset" also (i am talking from personal experience)?
I am the first one here who likes metal detectors MUCH and can not afford to buy any of newer models. So? What should i do? Die?

KT315 beleive me or not, but i entered in a world of handmades just because of one and only reason - i couldn't afford to buy original metal detector, than, at the time. So i decided to try to build one useable metal detector for myself.

Besides....Classic as project is most complete and most appreciative starting platform for further improvements, among any other model i have seen so far.
              Almost PERFECT!
Proof for that are numerous variants, versions and copies of the one and only (the first one) Classic!
KT315, exactly YOU posted several Classic copies here on this forum, under various names.....Sturm, Volksturm....analogue...digital with uPC..etc...etc..
Also i have been seen....maybe 10 designs more based on initial Classic schematic.
Most versatile and most adaptive project so far.
              So...
it is not mistake to mod existing original and improve it a bit, from time to time.
With or without chance to buy new model it is still joy and fun to deal with old models. Even if i ever become in position to have collection like Carl's and in position to each month buy new models on market - i will still have my amateur workshop and i will still deal with handmades, mods etc...etc...

KT315 i think you are the same kind as myself, you also like ALL metal detectors. You ,only, are speaking funny from time to time! Yup!

Speaking of Classic... it is legendary model. Model for all times!
Even today it is very competitive and useable.
If i was White's owner i would insist on further Classic manufacturing and development. I would change that traditional look and image by packing it in new enclosure, most probably the one like Prism serie looks like. I would design new extra powerfull DD coils for it. I would make it easiest and smallest possible (smaller than Tesoro Vaquero !!!), small smt pcb etc..etc... and i would present and offer to customers as top analogue model. There are huge percentage of experienced prospectors who dont like "digital mumbo jumbo" stuff with soft buttons, lcd's and menus. Those will be thrilled to see new Classic!

Vote Me for White's chairman and i will do two things:
                1) I will initiate "New ClassIC" production line,
                2) I will cut Carl's salary 30% down for next 3 months!

                  Hey!
                  IT IS MENT TO BE!
                  DESTINY!
... THE PART OF "GRAND DESIGN" !
                  U can't beat it!
