  • Teknetics Mark1 notch width modification

    Hi everyone,

    Let me try asking again.
I have a mark1, I really like the machine, but, in my opinion the machine would be enhanced by being able to adjust the notch width.

As the schematics are now available i was hoping that someone would be able to figure out how to do it. I am fully capable of doing the mod, just don't know how to design it.

    Thanks in advance.

I have a Mark 1 myself, and have been looking for the schematics myself, so where can I download them??? Thanks....

Thanks, after that I found it.....

Thanks, after that, I figured it must be somewhere in this forum, so went looking, and found it. But thanks for taking the time to tell me. I really appreciate that courtesy...

You are welcome. I really enjoy using the mk1, I have the grey one. Keith Wills sold me one that had been modded to be a hip mount. Very comfortable and wonderfully useable in this configuration. The machine does really well on smallish gold as is. If there was a notch window width adjustment I dare say that it would be a perfect detector for park hunting, even with the weight. I have the large coil for rmine as well as the standard one, target separation with the standard coil is remarkable.

I have the same machine myself...

I have the grey machine, the Mark 1, not the red Mark 1 Ltd, which has a more snazzy display, and it works good. I also have the larger coil, a 10" coil, from a Bounty Hunter red Big Bud Pro Ltd, which is compatible. I also use a interface unit, which takes the faint sounds, and amplifys them, but takes the louder sounds and brings them down in volume, as I am harder of hearing.

I wish mine was a body mount, as I always liked the body mount better, but it is not, and I find it is an awkard balance when handling. And I am not crazy with the tri-corner plastic nuts on the coil, hard to tighten them real tight, so the coil keeps moving out of where I want it.

But as far as the electronics go, it is stable, and a really enjoyable machine. And if you are getting a particular type of trash object, that you are digging constantly, lets say a iron like pull tab, just hold the toggle down, then turn the trash knob, trying to remember from memory now, up to the number where the iron like pull tab hits, and you do not receive that number location anymore. That is the best trash notch selection I have ever used. But normally I search for everything, and do not use notch, and set the discrimination as low as I can set it, and sensitivity as high as I can set it. Like the Olympicians, I am going for the GOLD.

Now you like trash notch width, I do not like it, as it loses too many things as it is right now. I do not notch unless it is absolutely necessary. I want to hear every target with my ears, and I let my mind be my "notch width"! My mind decides if I dig that target or not. And I have gone back, on second thought, and dug it, and never regretted it!

I try to dig every solid sounding object, and find more that way. If you do not dig every solid object, you are not going to find very much gold or silver. I know that for a fact.

Now if you want to only go for coins, and coins only, then the Compass Judge Magnum 2 is the machine, as you can turn up the discrimination, reject pull tabs and still get the USA nickle with it. It is the only machine I have ever used that will do that.

If you want to find meteorites, the Compass Yukon or the 77b above it, is the machine for meteorites. For some reason, it is very susceptable to meteorites, and I have found a lot of them in mining country. At first I did not know what they were, until I was at the museum in Denver, and low and behold, I was throwing away meteorites as "hot rocks". Well, I stopped that practice, and now have two meteorites in my collection. They sound like hot rocks, but do not respond quite like hot rocks, the give you the impression they are pieces of iron, and that is exactly what they are. I have also found ore samples the same way. I wish I had my old body mount Compass 77b back again. That was the best meteorite machine I have ever used.

And I have a Compass X100 machine and a Compass XP Pro machine too. I have two Bounty Hunter red Big Bud Pro Ltd machines, each has two coils, one is 10", but one detector is defective on discrimination mode, not on the all metal mode, this is the second time for this very same problem, I need to return it and get it fixed. I love the 4" blanking feature for surface trash, it only looks beyond the 4" depth. It is better than notching out the trash any day if you are in a high trash area.

I dont' use the notch too often, only when I am looking for something in particular, like small gold. It is sometimes fun to only hunt for a specific range of target, avoiding even coins. I agree with the solid hits and if you can remember the tunes it plays...even better.

                  Notch on Mark 1

Was reading the post below and am sure a simple notch width control could be added to the Mark 1, but for me it would mostly be the time to do it or research it, for I stay bogged down with folks repairs of their detectors here. You should easily find the circuit especially if you have the Compass XP Pro print, for it has a notch width as does your X100 unit that you can copy it's circuits from. I do have one Mark 1 LTD (Red Model) hipmounted with the newer 8 inch spider coil left for sale here if interested, used one time. As for balance of the hand held Mark 1, it is easily cured by hold the rod just above the meter and your other hand around the hand grip and pulling to make the two wider (like pulling a part a wish bone from a chicken's breast) trying to spread the two apart just an inch or inch and a half, causing the center of balance of the unit to shift enough that it becomes less heavy and much easier to swing for your wrist. I have done this for several folks and they are always amazed of the difference in balance and weight.
I sure you have already learned that while your adjusting the disc or the notch, if you hold the toggle switch on your grip to one direction or the other, you can watch exactly where you are setting the disc or notch on your meter as you set it.
Always glad to help if that was any help to you. Keith Wills

Thanks Keith for the leads on where to find the circuit design. You were right when you told me how much I would like the Mk1 when I bought it from you. That hip clip is great and I am glad you talked me into it. About adjusting technique for notch placement, the instruction manual covered it well and it is a great way to get it dialed in. I do adjust it slightly by ear usually to get the rejected target to crackle just slightly. I have found some smaller gold that would other wise been totally notched out this way.

Will any of the newer style Fisher coils work on the MK1?

                    Thanks Keith.

DO you want me to send you a pic of the mount with measurements? It would be very easy to make. You would have the toggle switch to the case or somehow extend it to the shaft.

                        Hi Keith,

Do you have the Compass XP pro print? If so, can you post it or email me a copy? I would be happy to pay to have it scanned. I have the large schematics I have mine scanned at a local store specializing in shipping items. It usually costs me about $7 or so.

Thanks for any help you can provide on the schematic of the XP pro or any of the other Compass models for that matter.
