  • Ace 250 Volume Mod

    No Risk, No Gain!
(This is a combination of: no risk - no fun / no pain - no gain)

If you trust in the good quality of Garrett or your warranty time's already over you should try this easy modification.

Sometimes the volume-out really is way too loud or you like to work in almost silent mode without annoying headphones. btw. lower audio can save power.

I used a 20-500 Ohm variable resistor and melted 3 little holes with the soldering iron at the "best place" - because the free space within the Ace 250 really is limited.

    Finally a question:
Anyone here can tell me for what the both variable pots at PCB are for (1 & 2)? Thx and good luck!

      thx for your interrest, kt315!

Your modification idea is much more complicated (finding and creating this soldering points at the pcb etc.) and your special variable pot is hard to obtain so what kind of great performance it brings for calling it "better"? It may be "better" in virtuality (theory), but not in reality (practise)...

btw. kt315 if you have the schematic did you found out for what those both variable pots are? Perhaps sensitivity, GeB or shifting of the discrimination level?

I could find it out by myself but therefore two extra battery-wires need to be attached.

With good ideas almost everything is possible!
Now I even don't need a screwdriver for adjusting by
using the flintstone-scratcher of a lighter and superglue!

someone knows how to connect a pot to adjust the volume of the headphones instead of the speaker?

Presumably X4 is in fact headphone switchable-connector you can take schematic from post Nr.:2 this way (you need to de-solder R55):

would it be possible to weld a potentiometer on a leg of the headphone connector without unsoldering anything?

Just use one of these cheap things:
                  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Portable-...item48c4cf4bec

Or make your own short extension cable, with a fixed resistor inside it, in series with the earphones. A value of 47 Ohms would be a good starting point.

This mod was for people who don't use earphones and
don't wanna have the loud beeps be audible 100m away.

There exists earplugs etc. with variable-resistors built into the
cables to adjust the volume or wireless one with same features.
