  • Special Pinpointer!

Below you can see my new selfbuilt pinpointer inclusive in-air-test-results. Those are around 3times better than the Whites Bullseye 2 and the price was only 30 Euros!

Here you can find the original:
    http://www.conrad.de/ce/de/product/6...ETALL-DETECTOR

And now my new one - the size is just 20x5cm and it runs with one 9V cell.

    In air tests:

    MD5 (Conrad Metaldetector MD5 modified)
    W (Whites Bullseye II Pinpointer)
    (/) Diameter

    Maximum detection distance: MD5: 20cm | W: 7cm
    Pot - 20cm (/): MD5: 10cm | W: 4cm
    1 Euro - 24mm (/): MD5: 5cm | W: 1,5cm
    Screw - 9cm long, 5mm thick: MD5: 3,5cm | W: 5mm
    small nail - 4cm long, 1,5mm thick: MD5: 3cm | W: 5mm
    little rusty metal piece - 8mm (/): MD5: 1cm | W: 5mm

Good Luck and special greetings to WM6 who for shure can't wait to answer - as always! Isn't it fantastic, my new "Micro-Nintendo"?

Congratulation, dear Funfinder, on succesful modding. This is ein real Krempel not like nintendo.

I modded such one in magnetometer by rewinding coil on ferrite - can post picture if you wish.

      WM6:
How you dare calling my fanstastic selfbuilt power-pinpointer "Krempel" which means: "old worthless stuff"?

Shure the circuit isn't "hitec" but the detection range is 3 times better than the 3 times more expensive Whites pinpointer so in total I got a 9 times success!

Thanx for your offer showing me/us your magnetometer mod - I'm interrested in seeing it. How does it work and how sensitive it is?

        Hi Funfinder,

those Krempel was in supportive mean only. I highly appreciate your constructors efforts.

Here picture of my pin-pointer made out of security detector and can be switchable to magnetometer:

It can sense moving screwdriver at 18cm distance.

          Hi Funfinder.
          Congratulation for your pinpoint.
Can you tell me why you replaced the round coil of the prototype with the square one???
          Did you changed the frequency???

          Regards

Very well then and thanx also for your constructive input.
Your Magnetometer Mod looks really great and professional! I guess it's not that simple as it looks.
What size has the screwdriver, does it also detect non-ferrous metal and can u use it as compass?

In the meanwhile I'm no longer shure the used circuit of the Conrad MD5 ist "usual pinpointer stuff". Because:

            - It only reacts when metal is moving.
            - uses high sensitivity "Memory Circuit"
            - switches automatically into Standby-Modus
            - uses 2 ICs

I tried to modified the electronic into non-motion pinpointing by connecting 2 IC pins but I only could eliminate the beeping sequence - metal still needs to be moved. Doesn't matter alot, it works!

            @ Geo
            Thanx for your interrest!

I've been very lucky with the new coil - there was nothing to change at all! I even didn't desoldered the coil wires, just moved the coil through an ex-AC-DC power supply housing, made 2 big windings out of the original coil and it fitted perfectly!

The new mini-coil is more sensitive to smaller stuff (til 8mm!) - this was the main intention - and it's better for searching into small holes.

There is one internal variable resistor for adjustment but I even hadn't to use it after modification. But I added a 2nd one because the piezo-siren was far too loud. Btw. a few hours ago I "modded" the tip of the Whites pinpointer - the old one was almost broken and the new tip will penetrate much better the soil.

And I heard there exists pinpointers that have already much better depth compared to the cheapo ferrite-coil ones - like the Garrett Pro or even better - vibratiing P.I. Pinpointers for under water.

But I like my new - "Mini-Metaldetector" - it will be the star of the next party!

Now I found that here (in Germany):
              http://detectorcenter.eu/
              http://detectorcenter.eu/Detektoren1...unter_md05.htm
this Detector MD05 costs inclusive handle 88 Euro - 3 times
more than at the Conrad. So always be careful where you buy!

              coin: 8cm
              cola-can: 32cm
              battery-life: 20h

                MD from Conrad

The pinpointer seems to be quite sensitive but a motion design as a pinpointer seems to me not the best concept for pinpointing needs. I assume you need to move it just slowly in order to get a response right?

You have to move the small coil, but only around 5 mm.

                  If you have enough money:
Better get the Garrett Pro-Pointer, it's much more powerful.

                    Probe modding

If I had the money I would buy either the garrett or an uniprobe or pistol probe. But I go detecting only occasionally. So far I found my stuff even with my Lidl stud/metal detector. It does 3 cm on a 1€ coin. It is just not so handy to probe around in a smaller hole.
The MD5 is available vor 20€ now on ebay. So I am temted to buy it and mod it.
I thought also buy a security wand and use it as a pinpointer. Right now my preferred model is sold out in ebay and I had to order it directly from HK.
