Few first impressions: first of all about the coil, what Ivconic said few pages back....- I tried mono coil wounded from a regular 0.5mm enamelled wire and it failed miserably...

So next I tested 300uH 1R coil 38cm dia - works much much better (PVC wire 0.5mm2). It's not tightly packed, it's somehow scattered around the place but still it works.
I want to try higher inductance coil, bigger wire diameter probably and test it with it.

Right now detection depth is not big, I hope I can increase that, or just make a larger coil ...

The good - It's very responsive - I mean no lag or lack of sound when swinging small & big object back and forth, and even with very fast swing - I mean baseball speed - I'm really glad to see that cos other PI machine I have built lately do that = really annoying.

Now for the bad part - sounds is itchy, scratchy and unpleasant. Well no so bad.. but still not so pleasant and smooth like the vactrol stuff there of Dooley's original deal.
It just starts and ends scratchy and rough, constant bleep also suffers but could be okay if volume is low.

Problems - I have a overheating problem with the LM317 (in my case LM33. It burns the **** out of it. The Mosfet is stone cold and the reg is just burning.

Haven't installed the diode (Mosfet insulation diode there) just to see if there's any real difference with / without it.

Pots will need a ground connection with their housings.

Growl control works! It helps to adjust the sound.

The scratchy sounds could be to much bandwidth width after the integrator. Did you figure out why the regulator is overheating? There is a Large voltage drop across it if it fed directly by the batteries so if there is a significant current draw power dissipation could be significant.

    • The sound appears to be frequency dependant btw (PPS). Overheating was fixed with turning down the frequency, was too high when overheated.

That sound issue is curious, wonder why that is?

          • Parts list ???

            • Yes the board had some issues (so this is an error).
If there's an interest I would build another batch, offering error free boards for those who already have this board.
However something must be done with the sound, it's very scratchy or at least mine was.
Probably It's best to revert that to Dooley's original sound.

Yes those vactrols have relatively slow response so filter the sound nicely.

                      • Hmm unfortunately no, 1st and only batch of boards and contain few errors here and there
(this one noted here, few trimmers will need just 2 pins due to wrong connection of the 3rd pin, also check the 555 oscillator for proper pulse width/frequency, I remember I had to make on the fly changes to make it work proper).

I have one of the original PCB’s.
I would love to get an error free one
Please let us know when they become available

Can you shared pcb up-down pictures?

                            • Does anyone make it? Is it ZERO useful? Is it stable? Is the detection range better than the XR71?

                              • I see a 16 pin IC on Dooley's stripboard but I don't see it on the schematic. Am I missing something?
