In the Fisher F-Pulse (pinpointer) I added a RNG to dither the TX frequency on a sample-by-sample basis. I was concerned about interference between the pinpointer and the main detector. The idea was the same as yours: it would smear coherent noise into non-coherent noise. Although it didn't hurt normal operation it also didn't help with interference. I commented out the code for now but could revisit it later if other ideas arise.

Thats interesting, maybe a lot of harmonics-intermodulations. I want to try that metod. Thanks for the reply Carl.

Many years ago I connected a random pulse generator to an old SD2000 Minelab detector, basically sweeping the timebase of the detector, I was experimenting with averaging for a better spread response to both large and small targets, the main issue was the ground balance was manual and I doubt that even a more modern design with auto ground balancing could keep up.
