  • Surf pi VS geotech baracuda

Which one do you guys like or prefer more? I want to build one of these and would love any suggestions. Also i am beginner and i dont own an oscilloscope so thats why i have these two in my list. Also let me know how do they compare with hammerhead in depth

Whatever someone tells you will always be different from the experience you will get from working with your detector. My advice is to make both detectors. They are not complicated to make. But for the coil you will need an oscilloscope to be able to choose the right damring resistor.

If you do not select the dumping resistors, the detector will work, but you will not have the maximum of its capabilities.

I can build one one now, so i will start with a surf pi probably and then the baracuda since i live in india and for the baracuda i need to source components from 3 different websites whereas i need to search only in two for the surf pi

The surf is a little bit easier to make because it uses a 4066 as the sample switch not fets as with the barra
the damping resistor needs to match the coil that you make, many ccts show a 390 ohm resistor this was for a coil of about 260uH
some ccts show a reverse parallel diode with the battery if you use that diode make sure you insert a fuse inline before the diode
instead wire it in series .

Buy bulk mixed packs of R's and C's off ebay they are very handy for projects

BC517 has a higher gain and the collector/emitter pin-out is opposite that of the MPSA113 so be careful when placing it on the pcb

For the surf pi, all i can find is 10v max rated 7660. Will it serve the purpose or do i need something else

ICL7660SCPAZ is good for 12V max or an LT1054 if you can get one although they are more expensive

KSP13TA is the more common replacement for the MPSA13 digikey part number KSP13TACT-ND

Make sure you're building the Geotech Baracuda, as there are errors in the other versions you may find floating around.
