    OK Silverdog,

It's working correctly now. I do have a scope. How would I go about hooking it up and tuning the board in for max performance.

    Thanks

Yes there is a sound but it disappears after a short moment maybe a half second. Sounds like it drifts away. Should i use a fine tuning Poti with more turns? The on i have can only be turn in an ancle of 270 degrees maybe thats not fine enough.

No need for a multiturn potentiometer, if your sound drifts... check the E caps if they are in good directions on the board .. and put the other trim pots in mid position then test again ?

          OK Success!

Got the bugs worked out and the settings zeroed in. Using my 9 inch mono coil I can hit a nickel at 9 - 10 inches, so I guess that's pretty good. Signal is faint but I would dig it for certain. Coil specs are as follows 21awg magnet wire, .330mH and 1.26R.

With an 11.5 inch mono I can hit the same nickel at a foot. Specs as follows. 22awg teflon coated stranded wire, .308mH .96R.

Use a set of headphones to zero in your settings ...works a lot better.

          Great little PI Silverdog...very happy.

          Thanks again,

          Bob

Great on getting it working well. Did you need to perform any PCB corrections? Reading some of this thread and others, there may have been a jumper or two to add/fix? I have not built mine as yet.

Did you have any issues with the FET getting warm with the 11" coil?

On the headphones - I noted that several detectors use a 555 audio chip in astable mode, creating basically a voltage controlled audio oscillator...driven by the integrator chip. If I understand these 555 output detectors correctly, this circuit would give perhaps a more pleasing audio response, ...and if you drive a speaker with a transistor (or darlington pair), you would get a lot of audio output. But I am not certain I understand the 555 audio circuit as used in those detectors so I could be way off base.

Also, I plan to add a meter to detect the audio. I like a meter...it is more sensitive than the ear (especially my ears ). I have tuned receivers for years with a meter (such as AVC or S meter).

              Hi N1PS,

Board was fine, my adjustments were way off. I haven't noticed any heat problems but it's only been on for maybe 15 minutes or so.

              Regards!

                c2, Timer 555

                Hello,

                can i use for C 2 (standard 25V 1000uF) 25 V 2200uF and for NE555 (old) the LMC555 (newer, faster, less energy needed) ?

                  Hi,

the LMC555 is a CMOS version of the standard 555 and should be compatible.

                  Regards
                  Jürgen

                    Hello,

No problem, both work. If your audio still drifts.. check C15 for good +/_ connection

                        Hello,

here are some pictures of my finished project.
Some improvements follow this weekend i think my problems were caused by some ic´s.
I ordered the right one strictly like the partlist. If it works than better i post it that nobody take the wrong ones like me.

                          Nice job Bernte
                          Is you setup waterproof ?

mine is working good now, i had to remove al the sockets to find an error under the last one on the pcb. but now everything works fine .

i need to find the right materials to make everything waterproof and if possible with neutral buoyancy.

                          greetings

                            Hello Bernd,

I see on the photo's that the via's beside the IRF9640 are "open" think it is better to fill the via's with soldertin , or even beter put a wire link over it, now... it looks strange, but I do not now how many current the via's can take, the ground from the 1000 uF Cap and coil is made with those via's. If anybody has comments.... ?

                            Best regards.

Oh no my setup is not waterproof. The housing is a good base to make it waterproof. put i have the trimpots outside and they are a problem but i dont need a waterproof version.

Today i have tried to change some ic`s.
                                The parts that i have
build in at first: changed part result

                                TC7660
NE555 ILC555N other metallic sounding but no change in range
                                NE5534AP
HEF4066BP HCF4066BE no change at first look but 2-3cm more range
                                HEF4093BP HCF4093BE the range falls from 15-18cm 2Euro to 5-10cm
                                LM 358

at last i only left the HCF4066BE i have a range up to 18 cm with a coil of 24cm diameter from LIY0,25/1,3 with 1,3 OHM and 470microH (measured with a LCR meter) wdg? maybe 30.

Next i try a coil from copper wire 0,5mm 30 cm dia 30 wdg
should be round about 500microH http://deepfriedneon.com/tesla_frame6.html
but i hope not more then 3 ohm

Thank you for the tip with the wire bridge near irf, i have thougt about before.
