  • 555 timermetal detector

i am thinking of making this circuit seems simple ...i know the drift would be voltage drop the 555 changes frequency if the voltage isn't stable as with batteries..perhaps more batteries and a regular might help.

Emmm? Runing at 700Khz, using a Ferrite rod type coil Probe this may be a competitor for the Falcon detector. Adding a Voltage Regulator would be a Snap. It could even be Off Board.

I have made the coils ...you might be able to point me in the right direction the arm in this case is plastic tubing i would rather Aluminium...and i suppose the reason he used plastic is it would effect the metal detecting ?

The electronics part seems easy to make i just have to see if i have that type of 555 timer more than likely have a 8 pin version than the 2 in one ic.

My main problem is not so much the workings but the look of it and what i can find to make it look good enough to take out in public and not be embarrassed !!!!!

i am also thinking of a pole than can be adjusted say to half its size or taken apart so it can be taken on trips instead of taking something the size of a wipper snipper !
Reading and looking at the circuit does any one know what effect making the oscillator tunable ? its running at 700 hz in the ULF range ..i am thinking due to the fact ULF is used in radio to communicate through the earth instead of the air as in the higher frequencies ...if this is adjustable perhaps it would have different metal detecting depth range depending on what type of ground you are working earth sand rock ?

Loo into some of these. You can use PVC the last foot. https://www.google.com/search?source...%3B1600%3B1600

I have no need of the circuit board in the pdf just using a PCB off cut which seems more than big enough for this project .
OH BTW i am not using the lm556 just handy for testing till i buy the cmos version from jaycar electronics.
The housing i have found i had a few old SHF downconverters used to receive PAY tv back in the 90s...no need for them these days so scrapping the insides and i with house the circuit board and batteries its also water tight as the thing used to be connected right to its antenna outdoors ... also has a nice fitting plastic end cap which would protect any controls from the weather.Click image for larger version
