I have a 3/4 built one of those. But I did improve it, by replacing that crappy diode OR-gate circuit with a proper XOR gate & low-pass filter, using a tiny-logic IC (5 pin SOT-23 package). A regulated, properly decoupled power supply is needed, too.
It's a tricky circuit, though. The RC and LC oscillators drift, in different ways. The RC oscillator is capacitance sensitive, so needs shielding or it will drift when your hand is near.
I was thinking of adapting it to use a micro size inductor, to make something like a Periscope Probe. I did some tests with SMD inductors (100 & 220 microhenries) and it had potential.
