  • 1st Metal detector>?

    Hi ppl,
i wana build my fist metal detector. wana check some places with a possible antique stuff.. antique coins and probably wana check some beaches too.
I leave in Portugal not so many rocks here.. more kind of that black sand and possible some clay.
i was tinking in build a VLF. what do u guys think? Probably i ill make another project in future, beacouse i have a brother and probably he want 1 too.
But for start what schematics do u guys advice? nice for start and not so hard to calibrate.

    Sorry my english.

    Best regards

really you need to start simple, the minipulse plus or geotech barracuda, both are great starting points with easy to understand build instructions.
the way george does them makes it easier to build with just a multimeter, my advice is not to get the cheapest meter get a better quality one that has reactance and capacitance as well as volts ohms and amps, you need at least a multimeter to build the detector and a reactance meter to build the coil, so getting one with all you need makes sense.
i would not attempt to build a v.l.f. on you first try, start with a p.i. and see how you go you really need an oscilloscope to build a v.l.f. with any real success, it is possible to build the v.l.f.detector with just a meter but building and tuning coils properly it is not, get a copy of inside the metal detector from amazon, either edition will help enormously, but most of all start simple.

      Edgar:

What is your background? Any electronics experience, kit building? Some understanding of the fundamentals is necessary to avoid tearing your hair out. Have any basic test equipment?

      Get the book!

Keep it simple. Go with Sinclairuse recommendations. VLF problems could be coil or board you could end up chasing your own tail. Also none of the VLF projects on here will work very well on the wet sand.

Edgar, Are Metal Detectors Legal in Portugal?

How much are you prepared to pay for a Metal Detector?

all legal if - main rule - you do not see the cops around. BTW some small pulse induction boards are so small
you can do a sandal device and insert a coil in its sole. perfect for illegal hunting at Turkish, Egypt, Portugal, Greek, etc
            beaches.

This is not entirely true, because people are also always their own
judges and feelings of guiltiness etc. can destroy a person big time!
Just a funny example: Having xxx in public and being ashamed of this!

But when we run around naked at the beach with treasure-sandals this would be fine!

Remember, just because it is illegal does NOT make it unlawful. If no one is being harmed and no loss caused to anyone then it is NOT unlawful. Dont forget "laws" are made by the HAVES so they can keep us have nots in our "place" ie POOR! They tell you its a law when in reality it is just a poorly educated politician being a puppet of the rich. NO MAN can have authority over another, all they have is force and that doesn't work well with me .

                OK rant over now.

                  Not illegal?

legislation introduced recently which prohibits searching for archaeological material without a permit. To obtain a permit, please apply to the Ministry of Culture in Portugal .

                    Apropos Portugal:

                    > It was later proved in trial that the recovered cargo was being carried by the Spanish frigate
Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, which sank off Portugal in 1804

                    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Swan_Project

The most ridiculous thing was that Spain claimed the treasure for its own country even if
the remains of the Mercedes were not found by persons from Spain and in international waters!

As they have told in the docu it seems there have been "diplomatic interventions"
for "giving back" the treasure from USA to Spain.

The problem is that even revolutions will not help against all those mighty ones
with their dirty tax- and weapon-force dictatorships because as we have seen in
France and Russia after a revolution just the next damned might and power-greedy
figures will "try" to rule the country and exploit the whole population!
So they can impress their harem and money-givers like some alpha-male!

What these greedy politicians meanwhile are doing, you can see everywhere:

They are dragging extremism, fanatism and terrorism into their countries
with their egoistical and stupid political activity and innocent citizens
are dying mass-wise in attacks, not those who are responsible!
Just take a look at Egypt, Turkey and whole Europe and how massive
                    the attacks are raising!

And of course they wanna have all the treasures for themselves!
In earlier years they even paid archeologists by taxes and sended them to
foreign countries to steal all the antique stuff there and in wars the same
happens. Just take a look at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia -
its full of treasures which have been "confiscated" or robbed in WW2!

And churches full of gold are the same exploitation! Stealing money from the stupid believers
for churches which have 100s of kg of gold and silver inside (leafgold, statues etc.)
While the priests are praying "poverty" - hahaha!

If you really want to build a vlf metal detector then try the TGSL EDU , i built mine without an oscilloscope just with a multimeter (DD Coil).
It works fine and discriminates very good. You can try the concentric coil, its easier to null without an Oscilloscope.
