My boards have arrived and are very nice, ran into a problem with parts cannot get a BC516 unless I buy 400,
the closest PNP darlington I can get only has a HFE of 750 which is very low and probably not suitable

You can make yourself a Darlington from two transistors, no problem.

But I'm just considering whether a BC516 is really necessary as a driver for the TIP31?
In my opinion there is a BC327-40

The other day i went to local scrapyard. Scrapyards are sometimes like flea markets for me, only cheaper, lot of fun and dirt! And costs nothing!
And sometimes i get lucky.
That day i was very lucky!
I discovered some special medical equipment, large metal box.
Inside large pcb, all shiny! (gold)
So i chop it out, put in a car and drive back home.
What i discovered on it?!!!!!
- 19 x AD712 in special package, gray strip over the chip (probably meaning something).
- 11 x AD711 ....
- 9 x OP37 ......
- 1 x Xsis2712-B Dc-Dc 24V In/200V Out
a lot more material which i can't recall right now.

So... OP37 is kinda interesting enough to replace LF357.
(what's good for Garrett - probably is good for us too)
