                              Looking at the circuit diagram, I cannot see any circuit part who is able to distinguish between gold, nickel or ferrous metals like seen e.g. in
                              the Gold Scan 4 detector circuit. In the TL12000 is only a sample delay circuit, which you can find in almost any PI detector.

                              So what makes the author claim that the TL12000 is able to distinguish between different metals?
                              Is it just misleading advertising?

                                TL12000?s discrimination secret revealed.

                                In YouTube videos, the detector TL12000 shows some discrimination capabilities. Analysing the videos and available circuit diagrams, posted here in the forum, it shows that the detector has only a sample delay feature like almost any PI detector has. The use of the sample delay circuit achieves some kind of ?reverse discrimination?. Further, the detector has a manual and pre-set sample delay functionality in the design. Again, this is nothing special; almost every PI detector has this function too.

                                The reverse discrimination feature (sample delay) and the use of a sample & hold IC ( LF398 ) needs to investigated further. Maybe these combination woks good to achieve a decent discrimination functionality as seen in the YouTube videos.

                                Looking at the meter circuit, the circuit cannot distinguish between different metals at all. The meter circuit shows only the target signal strength. Nothing more. The target strength is than converted by the LM331 (U/F) into a frequency allowing different target responses to achieve different sounds.
                                Again here this is nothing special or new, many other detector circuits on the Internet uses similar features achieved with a CD4046 IC.
