Good detector. With 20 Euro you can buy the chip with code and to construct it. But i did not hear from anybody to have construct it .
Any news????
Hi Geo,
well seems also relatively simple. But "discriminator" is a big word. Must use with care. I think it can't really have any good discrimination but much like iron or non-iron but with very huge targets not smaller.
Like other stuff e.g. PSII or goldscan - but this with an ATmega8 inside.
Well, if it can discriminate ...I mean...and that's not only advertising - like often is.
I've realized GS4 and has rough kind of disc...but, belive me, it's unuseful and you cannot really rely on it...the fact I've switched to VLF-bandido project is not a case...I GS4 really discriminate something well I never need to build any VLF anymore.
And I would remark that it's a very good PI !!! Good engineering - though old...but serves only to avoid mineralization of ground that interferes with searching where magnetic minerals are present. But they must be always in same concentration in the matrix...so,actually, I can't discriminate bricks with GS4!!!

Hi Max. There are some differences between GS4 and PSII or Lorenz or PD3200 etc.
GS4 play with sample Delay to Reject a metal....and not to discriminate a metal. So there is not discrimination. PSII or PD3200measure the time of pulse fall to determine a ferrous or non ferrous object. They really discriminate between ferrous and no ferrous objects.......But they have a problem. ...If the object is very big they can't discriminate ... the signal must not be very strong...
Anyway they can give you a signal that the metal in the ground is iron or no ferrous. If you like better discrimination then the VLF is the only way????
GS4 is an old PI detector but maybe the best PI detector or it is not a PI Detector.....it is a Work of Art
Pulse-induction metal detectors are quite popular , and purpose of this project is to develop detector, which must be able to detect slight signals and discriminate them to recognize the type of target.Tree discrimination modes allows selection of most suitable work mode with respect to work status.
Using the microcontroller in the modern equipment is already standard, it increases device functionality and improves results thanks to used software algorithms.
Signal processing in PD 3200 is digital, and application software controls sound signals for operator, data are displayed in built in alpha-numerical LCD display. So the operator works in the daylight, and gets full information about the signal level, its type, background level and type, which is important to choose the optimal work mode.
To increase battery life and charge it up to nominal capacity PD3200 has built in intelligent battery charger. Charging is in accordance with recommended manufacturers algorithms, temperature sensor is added to control the battery temperature
Hello Forum ,Geo and Max,
Congratulation Max to have built with success the Goldscan , yes i agreed with you for me a state of art detector also.
a very good trick for search in hightly mineralised soil is to work in DD configuration ONE big coil 5X5 meters (2 R about and 350 uH,3turns)) just in the surface and with a second coil of 11 inch (300-350uH) for Reception ,
you will search inside this 5X5 square with amazling result a 40 to 60 % increasing in the signal !!!.I mount the loop with a connection box where it has a switch to reverse the wire of the loop ...like that you can have a "negative signal" above the target or " a positive signal" ...very impressive result , I heard the signal of the loop at about 40 cm distant, the power was of 200 Ma current. For searching in mineralised ground it is a ideal must....no more false signal of brick, pottery , hot rock etc ... because with the extra increasing signal my small reception coil is now 25 -30 cm o more ABOVE the soil , also in the same configuration i search with a 60cm coil with bigger results ...what nice the DD system config...
For the PD 3200 two years ago I experiment with it , first it is a real headache to learn to use see the manual you must have a engineer degree to understand the "color" temp of the metal ... hours of telephones help (for the coil spec etc...) , I work a entire week first to try a good discrimination like VLF(not) ..... very poor sensibility also ...I put the 3200 in a box for six month and one day i see again the impressive circuit with this beauty of microprocessor, programming and display info , and i lost again 7 days in my workshop and in the field to try to have some results because i feel the sincerity of the conceptor with hundred of hours of programming and test, but nothing a "micro discrimination" result: it is a good circuit to practice electronic but REALLY NOT USABLE for searching too much false discrimination , definitly not a good vlf discrim....this guys are very big programmers but in my thinking they does not go in the good direction for the PI discrimination (the eternal direction of the different metal decay)...
Like many i am waiting with perplexity the result for the Pulse devil "discrimination" , I hope very much of positive result...
Hi Alexismex.
Very good news for me that there is a man that constructed the PD3200. I said that it was a good detector with good discrimination because very simple i saw the video of detector that they had at their site. Now it is very bad for you because you spend money and time. I am not waiting the result for the Pulse devil "discrimination". The only that i am waiting is an "distance detector", (where is it) ???
Regards
Hi all,
like I said (sadly) it's not good in disc. Better to use a vlf to discriminate something...or use a PI digging everything. There isn't a middle way.
I think that many non-professionals EE involved in MD have tried to make some good program for disc in PI using MCUs...but almost all failed. That's because of huge number of samples required in very few uSeconds and also because of the complexity and number of variables...
What to say...don't trust on advertising...if something PI discriminate for real it can't be by an ATmega8 ...
I'm awaiting too for pulsedevil by Dave E...to appears.

Hi Alexismex,
many thanks for the hints on coils. I'll test them soon with my GS4 proto. At now I have only the 8'' coil...homebrew with lot of success.
But had some bricks problems as you can see from my messages...then switched to bandido...I'm working on it at now. It has a real discrimination using phase shifts and is reliable on this...but is a vlf/t-r so performance is not like GS4.
Anyway, many thanks again and also for mineoro pics...I've enjoyed a lot.
