Plinio, it is typical to use high-quality poly caps (typically PP or PPS) in demodulators because they have better temp stability, less dissipation, and lower microphonic effect. This is especially critical in a VLF design where demod errors result in phase errors that affect target ID. In a simple SMPI-type PI design it is not so critical because all we're looking for is fast relative changes in the demod signal. So for the SMPI, even a ceramic cap will work pretty well.
Plinio, you have made a good observation about the different style capacitors. This is the first step in circuit design, one must use appropriate type of capacitors for the task at hand.
The following articles may help to see the vageries of capacitors. There are many articles on capacitors contained in old hobby magazines which are quite informative. I have found some very good ones. I'll try to post as many as I can.
