    • You confuse us, that's all.

Regarding 180 degree orientation of a transistor, you simply have to check every transistor with an instrument to know what is correct. If you can measure some serious beta - that's it. Same with all other components. I could read all my resistors by colours until they changed the base colour to blue. Now I use an instrument to read them.

Have you got all the timing correct, and the DC offset, You could have a number of issues, but check the values of the resistors as shown here, in the early days there was a mix up with two resistors that gave a lower sensitivity, there is a thread on it somewhere, once they were swapped the sensitivity increased.
What battery's are you using, you should be using 12volts with alkaline or nicads or nimh at least.

          • Paku found it for you, check R18 and R22

            • Hi, 6666.
I have the same problem as the Paku (detects only 2cm), already checked the resistors (R18 and R22) and are OK.
What could be the problem now?

                • Hi Falcon
interesting that you both have the same fault,
But may not be the same cause.
I guess you have checked the basics first, a good 12v battery, all the voltages around the circuit are correct, inspect pcb for faulty solder joints , short circuits etc, give the back of the pcb a gentle clean with brush and denatured alcohol and remove all flux,
a properly made coil, check dc off set, what type of 4066 did you use,
do the delay, threshold and volume controls all work, is the peizo buzzer connected the correct way.

                        • Sorry for the delay
My motorcycle battery is 12V - 5 amp
                          My 20cm coil, 18 turns, 0.5 mm wire (24AWG) or 20cm, 18voltas wire 0.6 (23AWG) or 23.5 cm, 24 turns, 0.5 wire (24AWG). all with the same results.
                          5 ICL7660 pin voltage is equal to - 4.75V, and pin 8 is 5.1v +.
                          In NE555 pin 3 of the voltage is 11V (+ or -).
In 2N3906 between the collector and GND is "4.4V".
Adjusted the offset -> 0V on pin 6 of the NE5534 (as described in the forum) and remains so.
The tension in my coil is 0.56 V.
Do not know if it needs some more adjustment / setting / trick / secret, or some substitution of values, so I am sending a picture of how this my Surf Master at this time (with the updated values).Click image for larger version

What are the red and white wires beside the IRF9640????
Check the dumper resistor. If it is a big one then the detecting distance is only 2 cm.
