  • Need help for a Garrett deepseeker. Please!

    Hi!! everybody:
I got this metal detector for $10.00,but it has a problem. When I turn this on, the speaker start making a noise like a metal is on the coil and never stop until I turn it off, I disconect the coil and still makes the noise. I was wondering if someone have had this problem and how it can be fix. If someone please share the schematic diagram for this particular metal detector or anything that help me to fix this little problem. I have allready traced, and I think that this problem may comes from one of this chips:
    MC14011B,LM358N,MC14016B and CA3290E.
    Please, any help!!
    Thank you.
ps: acctually this is the pic for my metal detector

I guess the battery check shows good voltages? The Garrett slide-in battery tray was notorious for developing bad contacts.

        Many Many Thanks!!!

Thank you for your help, both of you.You were right about those conectors Carl-NC, they where rusted so I had it to replace them(but still have the same situation ). This is acctually my first metal detector, I know some about electronics, so, I decided to give a try on fixing it (they very expencive).Whit this schematic, thank to Mr amtech2005,I will be able to repair it. I've been looking for this schematic for a long time, thank you.

        best regards Nelson.

The problem with the continuous sound..

            TinTin,

I read your post and see that you have had success with repairing your machine.

My machine has the same problem that your's did. I know nothing about electronics but is it still possible for me to fix it?

            Any help would be great!

            Shane

Mine does the same until I flip the toggle on the handle to the left.
I think this is to do with ground balance and believe this is how the machine is.
              Hope that helps

                GARRETT ADS DEEPSEEKER

Hello to all in this thread
There are several causes with this model and depending on what is doing, there are fixable.I have fixed a number of them cosmetically and electronic wise is one of the few models you can do so,because of how they are made and how good they are, to the point of stripping down completely the unit.By taking out all the rivets holding the different parts. So you are left with the aluminum box, cleaning the box really good of all dust and maybe give it a new spray paint job with kill-rust green color. Then replacing all rivets with stainless steel ones and put new screws. That's if it's only cosmetically no good. But if it's electronically sick also, they are manly the I.C's or transistors. So while the paint job dries you can look at the electronic part being on the side plate. From what I hear on this thread TinTin problem of threshold not being able to go down.He forgot to mention the CA3160 eight leg metal I.C on the tuning module, this module controls the tune or null and metal pot,and I have fixed several that had the same problem also check the transistors 2N5484 and 2N3906.This small module was set up separate to the circuit board, because is easy to remove and is the main problem with the tuning. It can also fix the post above to maintain the threshold in Manual if that's what he means.Because in Auto you don't need to re-tunne by going left on the master control toggle switch. And regarding the battery tray, even do Garretts sells the new type they still make now.Is made of two parts, the plastic mounting and the thin circuit board with all the nine volt connectors, they could sell you just the circuit board since they nicely put a holding screw to take them apart. But instead of $30 for the lot they would make less money, for all those accidents of leaving cheap batteries in for a long time and ruining the tray with the acid leak. But again you can go extreme and fix that too.By soldering new connectors from empty nine volt batteries or the snap on clips that mount the nine volt battery heads.I'm a big fan of this model and I have found the most items with it.Well kept and tuned. It can pick up 1/2 a gram of gold at four or five inches, that a lot of the new ones can not.Not to mention the powerful audio and depth on bigger items.I don't want to make this post too long so for now.Good Luck and Cheers to all.
