  • Garrett American S3?

Someone gave me a Garrett American S3 Detector.

Looking for the Schematic and or any other info ya all have.

Searching for this one is like looking for the Enigma machine code.

Lots of references to it and about it but no real info.

I found the User manual but it just list Push This Do That stuff.

The Instructions of VLF and TR are really vague.

Coil is marked Groundhog but is not the one I know.

    Small box, Top Controls VLF/TR

VLF is hot as a rocket but the TR is on the Lame Side. I can't seem to get more then 4 or 5 inchs with TR. The VLF has promose. Found goodies down to 9 inchs no problems. US Dime! This coil is only a 7" housing and States Concentric coil.

    Controls are:

Push Button on handle. Locks Tune Setting and or Resets.

Disc Switch is VLF/ All Metal
    Pop Tops
    Pull Tabs

    Tuning

    Ground Balance.

    High / Low sensitivity switch

Man I would love to find The small sharp shooter for it .

Basically an entry level detector, without meter etc.
Groundhog circuitry. Hot on silver. 4-6" was average depth in TR depending upon where you live. Would pick up a musketball at 10" in vlf with a low soft sound using the larger 10" coil. Good detector for the time period. If you had the extra cash, you bought the Groundhog.

Sharpshooter coil did not have any increase in depth actually less. But was ok for trashy sites.

This unit worked well at organized treasure hunts.

      Cool Bean!

      It has a Analog meter.

I would think the small coil would be hotter on gold.

OOPs confused myself with another Garrett---

The Fortune Hunter VLF/TR did not have the meter.
Anyways the small coil picks up gold in VLF mode up to about 4" in air testing if I remember correctly. Which is about what current detectors get in All Metal Mode. The Groundhogs were the best for prospecting for silver when we headed to Northern Canada back in the 70's.

I forgot the American was a TR detector.

This one must be yet another variant!

Only Pots are Ground Bal and Tune!

You could replace the Sensitivity toggle switch with a pots.

The DISC Toggle switch could also be switched to a disc. pot and then another toggle switch used to switch from all metal to Disc. And you maybe able to move the switch to the handle like the ADS Groundhog models. That is if you were planning to do some mods, needing the schematics.

Anyways you have a nice detector there.

Yep! Pretty Good in the VLF mode! TR seems a bit Liam!

Can't seem to find a schematic yet! When you change the batteries the whole top comes up and off. The circuit board is held to it by a few screws and the pots.

yea! the sensitivity just switches in or out different resistor's. Sure the Discrimination does the same. It would be most handy to have the schematic.

Is it similar to this one?

                  I found that one too!

Sorta like that one but no! This one only uses 2 9 volt batteries and has the retune push button on the handle. Two more switches , one for VLF, Discrim pull tabs or Bottle Tops.

One for Sensitivity, High or Low. Last one for Battery test.

May be the basis of it though! I need to do parts count, IC's and treansistors. IC types may be updated or like.

                  Thanks for the link.

                          Not even close.

                          Switches are not the same.

                          Batteries are not the same.

                          No switches for discrim.

Three batteries in lue of Two.

Hello Homefire !! It is good to show all schematics because it increases electronic design knowledge . Garrett made a ton of different Metal Detectors over the years , and I think some will be very close in design . Cigar is not needed I quit smoking 2 years ago . And I quit drinking Whiskey 3 years ago !! I am doing fantastic !!!! I hope you find a schematic , if not try Garrett . Maybe someone there will release a schematic from 1982 !!!!...........Best Regards.........Eugene52

Cool! I think I will try Garrett.

                              What can they say? NO?

I think I should dig into the old Pattents too!

                              Thank You for the Help!
